Last week, the Wheeling Nailers made their first road trip of the 2014-15 season, returning to the Ohio Valley with two completely different results. On Friday night, Clark Donatelli set the team record with his 201st game as head coach, but the end result was far from a celebration, as Wheeling was blanked 5-0 by the Gwinnett Gladiators and a 25-save effort by Mark Guggenberger. Despite a 317-mile overnight journey, the Nailers turned in a different script on Saturday, as they stomped the South Carolina Stingrays, 5-1. The visitors stormed out with a 3-1 lead in the opening period on goals by Sahir Gill, David Gilbert, and Zach Yuen, before Shane Bakker and Yuen added insurance tallies in the third. After allowing four goals on 14 shots in two periods to Gwinnett, Franky Palazzese bounced back in a huge way, limiting South Carolina to just one goal on 33 shots.
Yuen's two-goal performance on Saturday beats his entire output last season, when he found the back of the net once in 51 games with the Orlando Solar Bears and Toronto Marlies. With four points in two games, he is eight points shy of his total from 2013-14. Riley Brace and Carter Rowney both had multiple point games for the second time this season, and are currently tied for the team lead with six. Sahir Gill tallied a goal and an assist, while Max MacKay snagged a helper, as they each have seven points in their last five games against the Stingrays, dating back to last spring's postseason series. David Makowski's assist on Saturday was his first professional point, while Jeff Wyer made his professional debut on Friday. The Nailers scored on two of three power plays at South Carolina, while killing off all seven penalties, giving them a 25.0% power play and a 91.7% penalty kill for the season.
This Week
Thu. 10/30 WHEELING NAILERS @ Reading Royals, 7:30
Sat. 11/1 Reading Royals @ WHEELING NAILERS, 7:35
This week, the Wheeling Nailers will face one of their most common opponents, as they clash with the Reading Royals for the 133rd and 134th times in team history. The 134 meetings pass the 133 that took place between the Thunderbirds/Nailers and Toledo Storm for third most all-time, trailing only Johnstown (173) and Dayton (155) in that category. Wheeling and Reading have already met once this season, with the Nailers doubling up the Royals, 6-3 on Opening Night at WesBanco Arena. On Thursday, fans in the opposite city will have their first look at the season series, as Wheeling makes its first of six visits to Santander Arena. In 2013-14, the Royals got the upper hand, winning five of the eight games played in their back yard. On Saturday, the two sides return to West Virginia for the third of 12 head-to-head meetings. Reading took two of three games from the Elmira Jackals last weekend, lighting the lamp 12 times in the process.
