Washington Wild Things News Release
Washington, Pa -A pair of solo homeruns and a valiant comeback effort in the bottom of the ninth inning wasn't enough firepower as the Washington Wild Things, presented by Washington Financial, fell 7-5 to the Florence Freedom on Sunday at CONSOL Energy Park.
Florence got on the board in the second when Pablo Bermudez and Jacob Tanis hit consecutive RBI singles to give the visitors a 2-0 advantage. With one out, Freedom's ninth batter Kyle Bluestein jacked a three-run homer to put the Freedom ahead 5-0.
Three innings later, Stewart Ijames blasted a leadoff solo homerun, his 15th to put the Wild Things on the scoresheet, 5-1. After back-to-back singles by Shain Stoner and Mario Mercedes, Kalamar trickled a clutch two-out RBI single to bring Bart Zeller's squad within three, 5-2.
In the top of the sixth, Freedom batters Jim Jacquot and Byron Wiley drilled two consecutive doubles to put the Freedom in front 6-2. David Harris scored the final run of the night for the visitors via a solo homerun in the top of the eighth to cushion their 7-2 lead.
Down by five, Washington began their rally in the eighth when catcher Mario Mercedes smashed a solo homerun to left to make the score 7-3.
The team seemed to rally behind Bart Zeller and CJ Beatty as a confrontation in the eighth, sparked the Wild Things in their final Sunday affair as Ijames led the bottom of the ninth off with a single. Reaching second on an error by Freedom's right fielder, Ijames came around to score on Mark Samuelson's single to cut the deficit 7-4. With bases loaded, Freedom's pitcher walked in AJ Nunziato to bring the Wild Things within a score of 7-5, however, Washington fell short in the comeback effort.
Washington will have an off-day Monday before returning to action Tuesday against the Frontier Greys at 7:05. It is a Dollar Tuesday, presented by Dollar Bank, as all reserved seats are just $1. For tickets, call 724-250-9555.
