
Miners Lose to Rascals in Sunday Showdown

O'Fallon, MO - The Miners (49-44) were defeated by the River City Rascals on Sunday by a score of 8-4. Miners starter Brett Kennedy pitched six innings and allowed four runs off six hits. He recorded one strikeout. Miners reliever Kyle Wahl (1-1) received the loss as he allowed two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning.
Frontier League Rookie of the Year Danny Canela got the Rascals on the board first as he hit a RBI single with two outs to give the Rascals a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. The Miners tied the game at 1-1 off Rascals starter Drew Benes in the top of the seventh inning as Jason Ganek hit a RBI double to score Jereme Milons. River City broke up the tie in the bottom of the fourth inning as former Miner Will Block scored on a suicide squeeze to give the Rascals a 2-1 lead.
Steven Liddle put the Miners ahead in the top of the fifth inning off Benes as he hit a three-run home run to give the Miners a 4-2 lead. River City tied the game at 4-4 off Kennedy in the bottom of the sixth inning. The Rascals took the lead 6-4 in the bottom of the seventh inning off Miners reliever Kyle Wahl as left fielder Jake Atwell hit a two RBI base hit. The Rascals extended their lead to 8-4 as Steve Carillo hit a solo home run off Miners reliever Ronald Uviedo in the bottom of the eighth inning and Curran Redal hit a RBI double.
The Miners return to action at Rent One Park on Tuesday evening against the Gateway Grizzlies. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 pm. Fans can tune in to the Miners Radio Network, southernillinoisminers.com and ustream.tv beginning at 6:45 with the Heartland Regional Medical Center Pregame Show.
The Southern Illinois Miners are the 2012 Frontier League Champions and have been awarded the Frontier League Organization of the Year three times since its inception. It has also set a new Frontier League attendance record in 2007.
