Southern Illinois Miners News Release
Marion, IL - The Southern Illinois Miners were shut out 9-0 by the Florence Y'alls on Thursday night at Rent One Park in Marion.
The game was scoreless until the top of the third inning, when the visitors scored three runs on RBI hits by Luis Pintor and Harrison DiNicola off of Jake Fisher (5-9) to build a multi-run lead. They would add on to that lead with a pair of two-out runs in the fourth on RBI hits by Pintor and Sedio to take a 5-0 lead. Later, Florence would take advantage of four walks in the sixth inning by Zach Lauzon to eventually score four times on just one hit, expanding the lead to its final margin of 9-0.
Meanwhile, the Miners' offense was silenced, as they were held to three hits offensively by Frank Valentino (3-4) and three relievers, drawing six walks and a hit-by-pitch off the Y'alls staff, but stranding ten runners on base in the shutout loss.
Southern Illinois will look to bounce back in the opener of their final series of 2021 on Friday, September 10, at 7:05 p.m. against the Gateway Grizzlies. Recently-named Postseason All-Star right-hander Zac Westcott will start the game for Southern Illinois, while Ryan Mordecai will start for the Grizzlies in Marion.
