Florence Y'alls News Release
FLORENCE, Ky. - Tied at two runs apiece in the sixth inning against Schaumburg, Florence All-Stars Chad Sedio and Trevor Craport hit back-to-back home runs to break the tie to give the Y'alls momentum towards a 5-2 victory against the Boomers Friday night at Y'alls Ballpark.
The magic number to clinch the West Division's lone playoff berth is down to two for the Y'alls (56-37), who will remain in first place regardless of Evansville's result tonight versus Lake Erie. The loss for Schaumburg (50-44) - which has already wrapped up the Central Division - snaps a five-game winning streak.
Luis Pintor added some insurance with a solo home run off of Ryder Yakel in the eighth, though it proved to just be icing on the cake after a scoreless ninth inning for Joe Dougherty to pick up his fifteenth save of the season. Edgar Martinez went seven strong innings for Florence with seven strikeouts and just two runs allowed (one earned). Yakel allowed all three of the home runs for the Boomers and takes the loss.
Florence took an early lead thanks to an RBI-single in the third inning by Jose Brizuela. Schaumburg quickly tied the game and took the lead in the fourth with a Quincy Nieport RBI-single. Nieport - the Frontier League's Most Valuable Player - later scored on a throwing error to give the Boomers a temporary 2-1 lead. The Y'alls immediately answered when Andres Rios picked up an RBI-single in the home half of the inning to tie the game at two.
Geoff Bramblett went five innings for Schaumburg and allowed two runs. His first two appearances against Florence this season came as a member of the Gateway Grizzlies, and each was a scoreless inning to earn a save. The Boomers only recorded five hits as a team. Meanwhile, Rios had two knocks for the Y'alls.
The Y'alls look to inch closer to a playoff spot when the series continues tomorrow, Saturday, September 11 at 6:36p ET. Jonaiker Villalobos gets the ball for Florence. The gates at Y'alls Ballpark opens to fans one hour prior to first pitch. All weekend long, the Y'alls are celebrating the Florence faithful with Fans Appreciation Weekend.
