Gateway Grizzlies News Release

Marion, IL - The Gateway Grizzlies (38-55) dropped game one to Southern Illinois (52-42) by a score of 8-4 on Friday night.

Gateway scored all four of their runs in the first inning thanks to a bases clearing double from Jay Prather and a sacrifice fly from Dustin Woodcock.

The Miners answered back immediately in the bottom of the first inning with five runs of their own, highlighted by a Jared Mang two-run homer to make it 5-4.

Southern Illinois picked up another run in the second inning with an RBI single from Jamey Smart that scored Bryant Flete, stretching the lead to 6-4.

Two more came around to score in the fourth inning for the Miners due to Nolan Earley's two-run bomb, his 12th of the season, to make it 8-4.

Zac Westcott settled down nicely after his first inning on the mound for Southern Illinois. The 30-year old veteran went six innings allowing seven hits, four runs, two earned, and two walks while striking out five. He earned the win to surpass Ryan Bird for the Miners' franchise record for wins in a season at 14.

Gateway will take on the Miners Saturday night with first pitch scheduled for 6:05 CT in the second-to-last game of the season for both teams.
