Boulders Fend Off Jackals For Victory

September 10, 2021 - Frontier League (FL)
New York Boulders News Release

The New York Boulders jumped out to a quick three-run lead and then held off the New Jersey Jackals for a 7-5 win on Friday night at Yogi Berra Stadium in Little Falls, NJ.

The Boulders took advantage of the wildness of New Jersey starter Ricky Knapp to score three runs in the second inning, then answered each time the Jackals appeared poised to make a move.

In the second inning, Ray Hernandez single was followed by a Max Smith double to put runners on second and third. Gian Martellini's jam shot landed just shy of third base where Knapp fielded the ball and threw wildly to the plate to allow Hernandez to score and leave runners, again, on second and third.

Knapp would uncork a pair of wild pitches that would allow Smith and Martellini to score and give New York a 3-0 lead.

In the bottom of the second, Josh Rehwaldt would hit a solo home run off of New York starter Andy Hammond, the ninth long ball of the year and the first of his two on the night for the Jackals' outfielder - the blast cutting New Jersey's deficit to 3-1.

It became a 3-2 game in the third after an RBI single by the Jackals' Dalton Combs.

New York answered with a pair of fourth inning runs - one on a Martellini single and the other on a Kevonte Mitchell sacrifice fly, the runs increasing the Bouldrs' advantage to 5-2.

The Jackals got another one back in the fifth on a Santiago Chirino single, but a Marcus Masrrobuoni RBI single in the top of the sixth pushed the New York lead back to three at 6-3. In the bottom of the sixth, the run trading continued as New Jersey closed back to within a pair at 6-4 thanks to a sacrifice fly off the bat of Stanley Espinal.

New York added an insurance run in the eighth, extending their advantage to 7-4 on a sacrifice fly by Mastrobuoni, his second RBI of the evening.

Rehwaldt added his second solo shot of the night, his 10th of the year, in the bottom of the eighth off reliever Dylan Smith to bring the Jackals to within 7-5.

New York's Jack Sundberg set a Boulders' single season stolen base mark when he swiped second base in the second inning for his 48th steal of the year. Heading into the game, Sundberg was tied with Junior Arrojo, who stole 47 bases back in 2016.

Hammond got the win for New York, going 5 2/3 innings and allowing eight hits and four runs while striking out four and walking one. He improved to 5-3 on the year.

Smith followed Hammond with 2 1/3 innings of one-run relief. He allowed one run on two hits and struck out three. Smith did not walk a batter.

Zach Schneider picked up his fifth save of the season, inducing a bases loaded groundout from Justin Wylie to end the game.

Meanwhile, Knapp was tagged with the loss after surrendering five runs (three earned) on six hits over four innings while walking four and striking out four as he fell to 2-4 on the season.

Thomas Spinelli with two innings and Jack Weinberger, Matt Vogel and Dylan Brammer with an inning apiece finished out the game on the mound for New Jersey, with Spinelli and Vogel each allowing a run.
