Normal CornBelters News Release
NORMAL - The Normal CornBelters, presented by Illinois Corn Farmers, dropped their second straight contest with an 10-4 loss to the Windy City ThunderBolts on Sunday night at The Corn Crib. The CornBelters take Monday off before finishing the season with three games at The Corn Crib against the Rockford Aviators beginning Tuesday at 7 p.m.
The CornBelters struck first in the second inning on a two-out, two-run homer just over the left field fence by Santiago Chirino.
The ThunderBolts answered quickly in the third inning when Kyle Robinson led off with a double and scored one hitter later on a base hit to right by Doug Joyce to cut the Belter lead to 2-1. The Belters used a big fly to gain back the run as Pat McKenna led off the third inning with a home run high onto the left field berm for a 3-1 cushion.
The long ball to left changed the score again in the fifth inning, but this time the Bolts took the lead as Joyce knocked a three-run homer high onto the lawn beyond left center to give the guests a 4-3 advantage. The homer was one of five consecutive hits to lead off the inning, and Windy City added a run in the frame for a 5-3 lead on a fielder's choice ground ball by Mike Torres. The Belters cut their deficit to 5-4 in the bottom of the fifth when McKenna led off with a base hit and scored on a two-out double from Oscar Garcia.
Yet another home run pushed the ThunderBolts' lead to 6-4 when Chad Cregar led off the sixth with a home run inside the right field pole and high onto the lawn, then increased the lead to 7-4 later in the inning on a double by Kyle Robinson to trade places with Andrew Brauer.
The Bolts used an Andrew Brauer triple and Robinson's fourth hit of the night to make it 8-4 in the eighth, then loaded the bases in the ninth and scored on a Cregar fielder's choice grounder and a sacrifice fly to right by Zach Aakhus for a 10-4 lead.
The starters each went five innings and took the decisions with the win going to Markus Solbach (5-1) and the loss to Michael Schweiss (5-4). Colin O'Connell pitched the final four innings for his first save. The CornBelters left 12 runners on base, nine of which were in scoring position.
