Joliet Slammers News Release

(Traverse City, MI) - The Joliet Slammers (36-56) could not survive allowing two base runners aboard for the Traverse City Beach Bums (54-39) with no outs in the bottom of the 10th inning, eventually losing by a final of 4-3 on Sunday at Wuerfel Park in Traverse City, MI.

The victory was big for Traverse City as it cemented at least a playoff birth following the regular season.

Ryan Hartman (0-1) suffers the loss allowing two runners on in the 10th and Matt Miller (1-4) records the victory for the Bums.

Andrew Busby still has not recorded his first professional victory with the rookie picking up the no decision remaining at 0-6 on the season. However, Busby struggled to start the ballgame, allowing two runs to score in the bottom of the first.

Ryan Still and Carlo Testa came home on a bases clearing double from Jose Vargus to put Traverse City up 1-0.

In the second inning and with two outs, Niko Vasquez cut the lead to one run by hitting his seventh home run over the left field wall, making it a 2-1 game. Then the game remained scoreless until the fourth when the Beach Bums added another run to make it 3-1.

In the seventh Joliet tied the game score two runs, one on a groundout off the bat of Jerod Yakubik, and the other on a fielder choice from Grant DeBruin with Niko Vasquez scoring just ahead of a throw to home plate by shortstop Sean Gusrang. The game remained at a 3-3 tie until the 10th inning.

Jose Vargus was hit by a pitch leading off, Chase Burch walked for the fourth time in the game and then after a huge 4-3 double play off the bat of Zach Kometani it looked like the Slammers and Brett Zawacki would survive the inning. But the next batter in Gusrang hit a ball on the ground up the middle scoring Vargus from third base, winning the game and series for Traverse City.

The Slammers have an off day on Monday before traveling to Schaumburg to take on the Boomers on Tuesday in the final three-game series of the season.
