
Frontier League Post Season Award Winners Announced

Sauget, IL - The Frontier League announced its post-season awards on Sunday Sept. 1. Third baseman Jacob Tanis of the Florence Freedom and pitcher Scott Dunn of the Traverse City Beach Bums highlighted the 2013 post-season award winners. The Schaumburg Boomers took home the most awards of any other team including being named the Organization of the Year.
Tanis was voted the Morgan Burkhart Award winner as Most Valuable Player. Tanis is currently in his first season with the Freedom only joining them on May 8, 2013. He is leading the Frontier League with 72 RBI. Tanis was drafted in the 13th round of the 2011 MLB draft by the Oakland Athletics.
Scott Dunn of the Beach Bums won the Brian Tollberg Award as Pitcher of the Year. Dunn is currently leading the Frontier League with 15 victories and has only one loss on the season. Dunn has a 2.64 ERA in 119 innings pitched. He was also the starting pitcher in the Frontier League All-Star game in Washington, PA earlier this season. Dunn is in his fourth season with the Beach Bums.
Danny Canela was voted the Jason Simontacchi Award winner as Rookie of the Year. Canela joined the River City Rascals this spring after he finished playing with Lee University. He currently leads the Frontier League with a .370 batting average and has added 12 home runs and 51 RBI.
Jamie Bennett won the Rogers Hanners Award as Manager of the Year. Bennett has led the Schaumburg Boomers to a current 57-35 record and has clinched the 2013 West Division Title. Bennett was the hired as the inaugural manager for the Boomers franchise in October 2011.
Cannon Lester of the Southern Illinois Miners was selected as this year's winner of the Fran Riordan Award for Outstanding Citizenship.
Miners Field Manager Mike Pinto had this to say when asked about Lester, "In my 7 years in the Frontier League, Cannon is the single best young man of character that I have been associated with."
Lester is in his third season with the Miners and it will be his last as he is leaving the Frontier League and the game following the season to become a special education teacher."ÃÆ

Voting for the post-season awards was done by general managers, coaching staffs, and local media in all of the Frontier League markets.
The Frontier League, in its 21st season is an independent minor league baseball organization consisting of 14 teams. The division series of the playoffs will begin on Saturday, September 7. More information can be found at www.frontierleague.com.
