Evansville Narrowly Defeated in Series Finale against Schaumburg

September 1, 2013 - Frontier League (FL)
Evansville Otters News Release

Designated hitter James Mallard hit his first home run since 2009 and Chris Elder homered as well in the Evansville Otters 7-5 loss to Schaumburg on Sunday night. The Evansville loss, coupled with a Florence Freedom win, has eliminated the Otters from playoff contention this year.

Evansville fell behind 2-0 until Mallard hit a game-tying home run in the bottom of the second inning. The Otters almost added to their lead as first baseman J.R. Higley hit a deep fly ball to left, but the ball was deemed foul by home plate umpire Joe Harris.

Pitching in a 2-2 tie, Otters starter Robert Ramer then got into a third inning jam. With the bases loaded and one out, Vasquez hit a two-run single to right field that outfielder Joe Solomeno bobbled, leading to another run. Trailing 5-2, Evansville rallied back with an Elder third inning RBI single and a fielder's choice from Frank Martinez that brought Evansville within a run. Elder then tied the game with a sixth inning solo home run to right field. It was the second home run for Elder with the Otters this season.

Tied at five, Evansville nearly went ahead when Higley hit another deep fly ball to left field that was ruled foul again. After Higley walked and the inning ended without a run, Otters manager Andy McCauley argued with Harris and was ejected. Before leaving the field, McCauley covered home plate with dirt and Harris refused to clear off the plate to begin the seventh inning. The Otters decided not to pitch at that point as the game was stalled for the time being. After much arguing, Harris cleaned the plate a few minutes later, and the game continued. After recording an out, Ramer hit Bobby Martin with a pitch and the next batter, Gerard Hall, hit a go-ahead two-run home run. It was the second, two-run home run of the game for Hall.

The game entered a 1:16 rain delay in the bottom of the seventh and despite getting the tying run on base in the ninth, Evansville was unable to come back from the 7-5 deficit in the defeat.

Solomeno recorded his first professional hit in the game.

Evansville is off on Monday before starting a doubleheader against River City at Bosse Field on Tuesday. The first contest will be the completion of a suspended game from May 30 in which both teams are tied at nine in the bottom of the eighth. That contest will begin at 5:35 pm CDT with the second game (scheduled for seven innings) to start about thirty minutes after game one ends. The Otters will have left-hander Ryan Gibson (1-5, 3.35 ERA) start the second game against River City righty Tommy Mendoza (4-7, 6.22 ERA). The Otters pregame show starts at 5:15 pm on WUEV 91.5 FM.
