Gateway Grizzlies News Release
SAUGET, IL - The Gateway Grizzlies blasted three home runs and Tim Brown pitched eight strong innings in a 6-2 win against the Rockford Aviators Sunday night at GCS Ballpark.
A crowd of 5,494 enjoyed postgame fireworks at the final home game of the regular season. The Grizzlies (51-42) won for the fifth time in their last seven games and took their second straight series. The Grizzlies remain one game behind Florence for the last wild card spot.
Michael Wing started the Grizzlies scoring in the first inning with Gateway's first home run of the night - a two-run homer - that gave the Grizzlies a 2-0 lead.
Landon Hernandez picked up a sacrifice fly in the third inning before a Jet Butler solo home run in the sixth inning pushed the Grizzlies ahead 4-0.
Rockford finally got to Brown in the eighth inning, scoring two runs on two hits to come within two.
Brown (13-3) allowed seven hits and two runs in eight innings. The right-hander from St. Louis struck out five and walked no batters. With one start left in the season, Brown is one win shy of tying the Grizzlies single-season wins record (Erik Dessau-14, 2007).
Alex Guthrie added two runs of insurance with a two-run eighth inning home run.
During the fourth inning Sunday night, the Frontier League awarded the Grizzlies the 2014 Frontier League All-Star game. The Grizzlies last hosted the league All-Star festivities in 2003.
The 2014 All-Star week, presented by the Casino Queen, will begin on July 13th and end July 16th.
The Grizzlies finish up their regular season Tuesday-Thursday at Southern Illinois. Right-hander Jake Stephens (5-2) makes the start for the Grizzlies in game one Tuesday. First pitch is set for 7:05.
