Joliet Slammers News Release

(Traverse City, MI) - It took six pitchers, 10 innings and a total of three hours and four minutes for the Joliet Slammers (36-55) to record their second no hitter in franchise history this time against the Traverse City Beach Bums (53-39) on Saturday, August 30 at Wuerfel Park in Traverse City, MI.

Joliet won by a final score of 4-1 over Traverse City and it was the combined pitching efforts of Chase Doremus, Lucas Goodgion, Jason Sullivan, Cory Kimes, Matt Dillon and Bret Zawacki who secured the no-no on Saturday. It is the first no-hitter for the Slammers since Joliet's inaugural season in 2011 when Andrew Moss threw the first against the Lake Erie Crushers on Jul. 13.

Kolin Conner was also behind the plate during the complete game and delivered two huge insurance runs in the 10th inning on a home run to left field.

The game turned out to be quite the memorable first professional start for Chase Doremus who tossed four and a third innings while only giving up one run with five walks and six strikeouts. Lucas Goodgion came on in the fifth frame and faced one batter in Carlo Testa who he got to ground out to second base.

Jason Sullivan was then called out of the pen and lasted an inning and a third while walking one batter with one strikeout. Both Cory Kimes and Matt Dillon were next and both relievers allowed one walk through one inning of work and Kimes struck out a batter with Sullivan fanning two.

Bret Zawacki (6-7) finished the combined no-hitter, pitching two innings in the ninth and the 10th with a walk and three strikeouts. The Slammers closer was also awarded the victory as Joliet broke the tie in the 10th frame.

The Slammers scored the first run of the ballgame in the top of the fourth and the inning started with a double from Zak Colby. A ground out by Riley pushed Colby to third base and a wild pitch tossed by Devine brought Colby home for a 1-0 Joliet lead.

Traverse City did not waste any time tying the game as the Beach Bums scored immediately in the bottom of the fourth. Chase Burch led off the inning with a walk and following was Zack Kometani who also received a free pass. An out later Andrew Heck lined out to right field and drove home Burch to tie the game up at 1-1 Slammers and Bums.

The game would remain that way with both pitching staffs taking over the ballgame until the game turned to extra innings in the top of the 10th inning.

Marquis Riley led off the inning with a single then Niko Vasquez grounded into a 6-4-3 double play. With two outs in the frame it looked like the Beach Bums would get out of the top of the 10th but then Jerod Yakubik singled to right field and Grant DeBruin doubled home the winning run to make it 2-1 Joliet.

That is when Kolin Conner added two-insurance run, blasting a ball to deep left field for a two-run bomb, putting the Slammers up 4-1.

In the bottom of the inning and Zawacki back on the hill, Ryan Still struck out and then Carlo Testa walked. With a runner on and one out Zawacki got 2012 Frontier League MVP Jose Vargus to ground into a game ending 6-4-3 double play to cement the no-hitter in the books for Joliet.

The series finale is tomorrow and first pitch comes at 4:05 central time with Andrew Busby (0-6, 2.98) on the hill.
