Total Team Effort Earns Bats 6-5 Win Over Iowa in Extra Innings

DES MOINES, IA - A total team effort helped down the Iowa Cubs (67-47) in extra innings as the Louisville Bats (61-54) secured a 6-5 comeback victory on Thursday night at Principal Park.

Iowa jumped on the board early, scoring three runs on three hits and two walks in the home half of the first inning to take a 3-0 lead.

After a rough first inning, Louisville starter Lyon Richardson (0-0, 3.60) settled in for the remainder of his start. Richardson turned in 3.2 good innings, allowing just the three runs on four hits, striking out a new Triple-A high seven with three walks.

The Bats finally got on the board in the top of the fifth inning, scoring two runs with two outs. Alejo Lopez got the effort started with a line drive single before scoring on a first pitch double off the bat of Matt Reynolds. Nick Martini followed with a single to bring Reynolds home and cut the Bats' deficit to 3-2.

After the I-Cubs scratched across one more run in the bottom of the fifth, the Bats scored a run of their own in the following frame. Nick Senzel stole his second base of the season after reaching on a hit by pitch, later scoring on a groundout by Chuckie Robinson to get back within one at 4-3.

Iowa extended their lead by a run another run yet again in the bottom of the sixth inning before Reynolds hit his 20th home run of the year, a solo shot over the right field wall to put the Bats back within one, still down 5-4.

Louisville continued to fight, recording back-to-back extra-base hits in a triple by Senzel and double by Jose Barrero in the eighth inning to bring home a run and tie the game at 5-5.

Making his second relief appearance of the season, Christian Roa (0-3, 6.89) tossed 3.0 good innings for the Bats, giving up just one run on three hits while striking out five and walking one.

After a quiet ninth inning for both teams, the game entered extra innings. The Bats scored one run in the top of the tenth on a sacrifice fly by Barrero that brought home the free runner Noelvi Marte. Daniel Duarte (4-0, 3.16) came on in the ninth and Silvino Bracho (2-2, 3.63) came on in the tenth and shut down Iowa, throwing a perfect inning each. Duarte earned the win, recording two strikeouts and Bracho took home the save, his second of the year, tallying one strikeout.
