August 17, 2023 - International League (IL)
Rochester Red Wings News Release
The Rochester Red Wings dropped the second game of their thruway series in Buffalo Thursday night, 7-1. The Wings were held to just four hits, while RHP Joel Peguero and RHP Daniel Mengden each submitted 2.0 scoreless innings in relief of LHP Alemao Hernandez, who made his Triple-A debut.
Rehabbing Big Leaguer SS Bo Bichette kicked off the scoring in the bottom of the first, launching a two-run homer that scored LF Rafael Lantigua and gave Buffalo a 2-0 lead. DH Ernie Clement followed the homer with a double down the left-field line and moved to third on a fly ball in the next at-bat. A ground out to third base by 1B Luis De Los Santos kept Clement at third base for the second out, and a pop out to first base ended the inning without further damage.
Buffalo extended their lead to in the third, this time on back-to-back one-out RBI singles off the bat of 2B Orelvis Martinez and Luis De Los Santos to give the Bisons a 4-0 lead. The scoring continued in the fourth for Buffalo, as they tacked on two more on a pair of sacrifice flies.
Rochester broke into the run column in the fifth, loading the bases with no one out before 2B Luis Garcia grounded into a double play to score SS Richie Martin and cut the lead to 6-1 after four and a half innings.
Buffalo pitching dominated for the remainder of the contest, holding Rochester hitless from the sixth inning on. The Bisons tacked on another run in the eighth on a fielder's choice from CF Cam Eden to make the score 7-1, and set the Wings in the ninth to tie the series at a game apiece.
LHP Alemao Hernandez (0-1, 18.00) made the start in what was his Triple-A debut. The southpaw logged 3.0 innings of work, allowing six earned on nine hits while striking out and walking a pair, taking the loss. Joel Peguero came in first out of the bullpen with 2.0 scoreless with one strikeout, and was followed by another pair of scoreless innings from Daniel Mengden. The two combined to not allow a baserunner from the fifth through the seventh. RHP Luis Cessa covered the eighth, allowing an earned run on a hit while walking one.
Thursday night's Diamond Pro Player of the Game is RHP Daniel Mengden. The Texas native was the second arm to come in relief tonight for the Red Wings and tossed 2.0 scoreless with one strikeout on just 14 pitches. He has allowed just one earned over his five appearances (7.0 IP), averaging a strikeout per inning over that span.
Rochester looks to retake the series lead Friday night, with RHP Wily Peralta taking the mound for his team-leading 22nd start of the season. First pitch is set for 7:05 p.m.
