August 17, 2023 - International League (IL)
Iowa Cubs News Release
DES MOINES, IA - The Iowa Cubs (67-47) had their seven-game winning streak snapped with a 6-5 loss in extra innings to the Louisville Bats (61-54), Thursday at Principal Park.
Iowa didn't waste any time getting on the board, scoring three runs in the first inning on a two-run double from Alexander Canario and an RBI single from Jared Young.
Jordan Wicks got off to a hot start as well, striking out five batters over his first two innings, including four straight. The southpaw allowed two earned runs on five hits and one walk while striking out seven over his 4.2 innings pitched.
The two runs came in his final inning of work on an RBI double by Matt Reynolds followed by a run-scoring single off the bat of Nick Martini. Iowa earned one run right back in their half of the fifth on an RBI double from Matt Mervis, bringing their lead to 4-2.
Louisville cut into their deficit in the sixth on a ground out from Eric Yang, but once again, Iowa came right back with a run of their own. Luis Vazquez used an RBI single to bring home a fifth run for the I-Cubs, making it a 5-3 game.
Unfortunately for Iowa, the Bats scored one in each the seventh and eighth innings to tie the game, getting a solo home run from Reynolds and an RBI double from Jose Barrero. Barrero used a sacrifice fly in the 10th to put Louisville ahead 6-5 and that is where the game would stay.
POSTGAME NOTES:
