AHL Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins

Thiessen Named All-Star Game Starter

January 11, 2011 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins News Release

The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins will be well-represented at the 2011 AHL All-Star Classic, presented by Capital Blue Cross.

Penguins netminder Brad Thiessen was named a starter for the Eastern Conference All-Stars today, and will be joined on the team by Penguins forward Dustin Jeffrey.

Thiessen leads the AHL with 17 wins this season, and ranks in the top 10 in goals against average (2.06 - 6th place) and save percentage (.921 - 10th). The second year pro has already bettered his rookie season win total (14).

Currently on his second NHL recall of the season, Jeffrey ranks seventh in the AHL with 38 points (15+23) in 35 games with Wilkes-Barre/Scranton, leading the team in points and assists, and ranking second in goals. This is the second consecutive All-Star selection for the Penguins forward.

Thiessen and Jeffrey will be facing off against head coach John Hynes, who will help to guide the Western Conference All-Stars by virtue of having the best record in the AHL at 30-8-0-0.

Hynes is the third Penguins head coach to earn the honor of coaching some of the American Hockey League's top talent. Joe Mullen, along with assistant coach Al Sims, guided the PlanetUSA All-Stars in the 2006 RBK Hockey All-Star Classic in Winnipeg, Manitoba, while head coach Todd Richards, assisted by Dan Bylsma, coached the 2007 RBK Hockey PlanetUSA All-Stars to a 7-6 victory over the Canadian All-Stars in Toronto.

The American Hockey League has implemented a format of Eastern Conference against Western Conference, a change from the past several years of Canadian All-Stars battling against PlanetUSA.

Hershey's Giant Center is the host venue for the AHL Skills Competition, to be held on Sunday, January 30 at 3:00 pm. The 2011 AHL All-Star Classic Presented by Capital Blue Cross will then face off at 7:00 pm on Monday, January 31.
