Norfolk Admirals News Release
CLEVELAND, OH - Paul Szczechura netted two goals - including the game-winner in the third period - and Karri Ramo stopped 39 shots as the Norfolk Admirals (1-1-0-1) picked up their first win of the season over the Lake Erie Monsters (2-1-0-0) 4-2 on Friday night at the Quicken Loans Arena.
The Monsters got on the board first with a Brian Willsie tally 1:24 into the opening period.
Norfolk answered back with a Szczechura power play goal under a minute later. Brandon Bochenski sent a pass from the right corner to Szczechura in the slot, and Szczechura one-timed the puck past Lake Erie netminder Tyler Weiman at 2:22.
Szczechura set up the go-ahead goal for the Admirals 14:39 into the second stanza. While stationed behind the Lake Erie net, Szczechura sent a pass toward the bottom of the left circle, where Radek Smolenak sent a chip shot over Weiman's right shoulder for a 2-1 Norfolk lead.
The Monsters briefly tied the game at two goals apiece 3:11 into the final frame with a Philippe Dupuis goal.
However, Szczechura answered back just over two minutes later after he won a faceoff to Brandon Segal along the left wing. Segal skated to the left corner and gave the puck back to Szczechura, who sent a shot past Weiman from the left faceoff dot at 5:16.
Bochenski tacked on an insurance marker midway through the period, as his shot from the slot deflected off a defender and the post before denting the twine at 11:56.
Karri Ramo (41 shots, 39 saves) earned the win. Tyler Weiman (29 shots, 25 saves) got the loss.
Norfolk was 1-4 on the power play. Lake Erie was 0-5.
The Admirals will now head north of the border to face off against the Hamilton Bulldogs for the first time in franchise history. The game begins at 7:00 tomorrow evening.
