Manchester Monarchs News Release
LOS ANGELES, CA - The Los Angeles Kings, the parent club of the Manchester Monarchs, have signed defenseman Matt Greene to a five-year contact extension that will carry into the 2013-14 season, Kings President/General Manager Dean Lombardi announced today. Per club policy, terms of the agreement were not announced (Greene's current contract is set to expire at the end of this season).
Today's signing of Greene to a five-year contract extension comes six days after the Kings signed center Anze Kopitar to a seven-year contract, the second longest in club history. Kings forward Dustin Brown last year signed a six-year contract, and forwards Jarret Stoll, four years, and Patrick O'Sullivan, three years, also recently signed long-term contracts to remain with the Kings.
Greene, 25, is in his first season with the Kings after playing the last three seasons with the Edmonton Oilers. He was acquired by the Kings on June 29 with Stoll for Lubomir Visnovsky, and on October 8 he was named one of the club's assistant captains (along with Kopitar as Brown was named captain). In three games with the Kings this season, Greene has zero points and seven penalty minutes.
Greene in 2007-08 recorded one point (an assist) and 53 penalty minutes in 46 games with Edmonton. In 2006-07 he played in 78 games and recorded 10 points (1-9=10) and 109 penalty minutes. In 154 career games with the Kings and the Oilers, the 6-foot-3, 233-pound native of Grand Ledge, Michigan, has 13 points (1-12=13) and 212 penalty minutes. He has also played in 18 playoff games, including the Stanley Cup Finals in 2006, recording one point (an assist) and 34 penalty minutes.
The Monarchs travel to the Tsongas Arena on Friday, October 17 for a 7 p.m. contest with the Lowell Devils before they return to the Verizon Wireless Arena for the Home Opener against the Devils on Saturday, October 18 at 7:30 p.m. The first 5,000 fans to the Home Opener will receive a 2008-09 magnetic schedule and the chance to win a full-size or mini-refrigerator. Catch all of the play-by-play action of Monarchs hockey with Ken Cail on the Monarchs Radio Network WGAM 900/1250 AM and at www.manchestermonarchs.com.
