Pink Helps Power Rivermen to 3-1 Win

October 17, 2008 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Peoria Rivermen News Release

Peoria, Il - Ben Bishop made 23 saves and picked up the first assist of his professional career to lead the Peoria Rivermen to a 3-1 win over the Milwaukee Admirals Friday night at Carver Arena. Nikolay Lemtyugov and Steve Regier added a goal and an assist each to help the Rivermen celebrate their first "Pink in the Rink" Breast Cancer Awareness Night to benefit the Mary Kay Ash Charitable Foundation.

After a deadlocked first period, in which the shots were tied at 7 apiece, it was a pair of power plays that started the ball rolling for the Rivermen. With Nick Spaling in the box for hooking, Lemtyugov unloaded a slapshot from just above the right circle that beat Mark Dekanich to open the scoring at 6:33 of the second period. Regier and Jim Jackson earned assists on the play.

Just four seconds after the goal, the Admirals were whistled for another infraction that kept the Rivermen peppering shots at the Milwaukee goal. Shortly after the penalty expired Lemtyugov, who had his hair dyed pink to support the event, returned the favor by setting up Regier for his third goal of the season. Nicholas Drazenovic worked the puck along the goal line to Lemtyugov. After drawing three defenders towards him, he dished it on the backhand to an open Regier waiting at the goal mouth.

The 2-0 score would hold until the waning minutes of the third period when Milwaukee broke their scoring drought with a power-play tally of their own. It was the first power-play goal of the season for the Admirals and the second score of the year for Antti Pihlstrom. It was from Cal O'Reilly and Mike Santorelli at 17:42.

Chris Conner sealed the deal on the empty net at 19:06 thanks to the efforts of Bishop and Trent Whitfield. After the Admirals sent the puck into the Rivermen zone, Bishop lofted the puck the length of the ice. Whitfield's hustle beat out the icing and he was able to slide it to Conner at the side of the goal.

Peoria was out-shot 24-22 overall including 10-4 in the third period but Bishop held the Rivermen in the game. Dekanich, despite a strong performance, was saddled with the loss in his professional debut

The Rivermen have now won back-to-back games after falling in their first two of the season. They travel to Chicago on Saturday to meet the Wolves for the first time this season. The game can be heard live on Hippie Radio 101.1FM or online at www.rivermen.net.

The team will return to Carver Arena on Oct. 25 to battle the Lake Erie Monsters in a two-game series. Game time is set for 7pm on Saturday with the rematch scheduling for the following afternoon at 3pm.
