LOWELL, Mass. - The Lowell Devils saw the Manchester Monarchs jump out to an early 3-0 lead in the first period and could never recover in a 6-4 loss on Friday at the Tsongas Arena. Teddy Purcell led the Monarchs offense as he scored twice - scored the first and last goal of the contest.
Purcell drew first blood in the game with a shorthanded tally 2:11 into the opening period, as Gabe Gauthier stole the puck at center ice and fed his teammate for a backhander that went top shelf. Manchester would strike again under three minutes later when Bud Holloway pounced on a rebound in the crease and fired it past goalie Scott Clemmensen. The scoreboard then read 3-0 in the Monarchs' favor at 10:12 as Trevor Lewis tipped Davis Drewiske's point shot in the left corner of the net.
After Vladimir Dravecky put Manchester up 4-1 at 1:57 of the middle frame, the Devils would find their legs and pull within one. Pascal Rheaume notched his first of the season as hopped to the rebound of Matt Corrente's wrister and threw into the back of the net. Lowell would convert on the power play a 1:17 after Rheaume's maker when Tyler Eckford's shot from blueline sailed past a screened Jonathan Bernier.
Paul Crosty would help stop the Devils' momentum with a key goal coming with five minutes left until the intermission. The Manchester forward was on the doorstep to bat in the carom of Scott Parse's shot from the far wall.
Lowell defenseman Jay Leach and Purcell would trade goals in the third period as the Monarchs skated away with the victory. Patrick Davis notched the Devils' first goal of the game with a marker on the man-advantage at 17:05 of the first.
Clemmensen finished the contest with 35 saves in the game. The Devils went 2-for-7 on the power play and a perfect 9-for-9 on the penalty kill.
The Devils will travel to the Verizon Wireless Arena on Saturday, October 18th at 7:30 p.m for the back half of the home-and-home series versus the Manchester Monarchs.
