Idaho Steelheads News Release

BOISE, Idaho - On a night when the Idaho Steelheads honored their millionth fan and played the first Monday night home contest in team history, they defeated the Long Beach Ice Dogs, 7-3 to sweep the 3-game series before 4,015 at the Bank of America Centre.

Jason Cugnet got his third win in as many nights to improve his record to 11-4-1 and extend the Steelheads undefeated streak at home to 12 games.

The Steelheads dominated play through the first period. Jeff Shevalier put Idaho on the board with an unassisted goal and his first of the season at 11:38 of the first period. The first 20 minutes ended with the Steelheads up by one.

Long Beach came out strong in the second and tied it up 49 seconds into the period on a goal by J.P. O'Connor, assisted by goaltender B.J. Boxma. At the 4:13 mark, the Ice Dogs took the lead with O'Connor scoring his second of the night on a rebound off a missed shot by Tyler Willis, who picked up the only assist on the play. Long Beach would not keep the lead for long as Idaho's Cory Morgan exited the penalty box and beat Boxma on a breakaway at 7:03, assisted by Shevalier and Joe Rybar. Scott Swanson then put Idaho ahead for the second time in the game with a shot on a nice feed through traffic from Rory McDade. Derrick Atkinson also got an assist on the goal. The game began to resemble a ping-pong match when Long Beach again tied it up at 3 apiece on a goal by Jeff Marshall at 14:02, assisted by Chris Kenady and Nathan Horne. But the Steelheads jumped ahead again when Marty Flichel scored a shorthanded goal through the 5-hole, assisted by Jonathan Shockey and Petr Suchanek at 15:26.

Idaho scored first in the third period to put the Steelheads up by two goals when Swanson got his second of the night at 3:14. A.J. Begg and Ben Keup collected the assists on the goal. Flichel doubled the score in Idaho's favor to 6-3 with his second of the night at 15:23, assisted by Keup and Dan Shermerhorn. A.J. Begg finished off the scoring with his first goal of the year, a power play goal at 18:11, assisted by McDade.

The millionth fan through the turnstiles was Boisean Bob Rice, who won numerous prizes, including 2003-04 season tickets, a trip to see the Steelheads play in San Diego, Steelheads merchandise and a lifetime supply of Pepsi at the arena.

Next up for the Steelheads is a 3-game series against second-place Bakersfield starting Wednesday, December 18th at the Bank of America Centre.
