Idaho Steelheads News Release
BOISE, Idaho - The Idaho Steelheads were out-played, out-skated, and out-scored in Friday night's contest against the Long Beach Ice Dogs at the Bank of America Centre. The 4,210 fans saw their team fall behind 7-0 by the middle of the second period.
Long Beach jumped out to an early lead and dominated the first period. Just 3:16 into the game, Joe Cardarelli feathered a nice pass from behind the Idaho net to Sergei Klyazmin, who was all alone to Colin Zulianello's left and easily put it past the Idaho netminder. Just 1:19 later, the Ice Dogs struck again when ECHL All-Star Marco Rosa beat Zulianello for his 10th goal of the season. With Idaho's Riley Riddell in the box serving the second half of a double minor, Long Beach beat the Steelheads again. Evan Cheverie deposited the puck in the net from the short slot. The Ice Dogs again struck quickly less than a minute later when Paul Dunphy picked up a rebound off Zulianello's right pad and made it 4-0. After the goal, Zulianello was replaced by ECHL All-Star Frank Doyle, who was returned today from the Utah Grizzlies, Idaho's American Hockey League (AAA) affiliate.
With only :6 played in the second period, Idaho took a penalty giving Long Beach its fourth power play of the game. Just after the power play expired Long Beach's Nathan Martz wristed one from the circle, beating Doyle glove side. At 7:38, Long Beach added insult to injury when Dan Watson beat a screened Doyle at 7:38. Idaho had another power play, but was unsuccessful in capitalizing. Instead, Paul Spadafora scored, beating Doyle five-hole. Idaho finally put a tally on the board on the power play at 13:02. Bobby Russell jammed the puck past Long Beach goalie Chris Madden from Jonathan Zion's initial shot. With 1:32 left in the middle frame, Idaho had another man-advantage. Idaho had outshot Long Beach 25-20 by the end of the second period.
At 9:32 of the third period, Russell scored his second of the game on a rebound. Frank Lukes took the shot and with traffic out in front of the Long Beach net, Russell found the puck and scored.
The two teams will play the rubber match tomorrow night, same place same time.
