Myrtle Beach Thunderboltz News Release
GREENVILLE, SC â The Pee Dee Pride scored four power-play goals, including three in the third period, to come back and defeat the Greenville Grrrowl 4-2 at the BI-LO Center on Friday night.
The Grrrowl drew first blood 4:14 into the first period, taking advantage of a give-away by Pride defenseman Jake Wiegand. Martin St. Pierre stole the puck off of Wiegand's stick at the Pride blue line, and fed Carl Mallette down low. Mallette was able to deke Sebastien Laplante to the ice, and slid a shot past the Pride goaltender for his 19th goal of the season.
The resurgent Pee Dee power play tied the game at the 13:38 mark of the opening frame. Jeff Szwez centered a pass in front for Allan Sirois, and the Pride veteran beat Grrrowl goaltender Mike Brodeur high for his ninth goal of the season.
Mallette struck again at the 4:36 mark of the second period, to give Greenville a 2-1 lead. With the power play, Mallette faked a shot from the top of the left-wing circle, and then quickly snapped a shot over Laplante's left shoulder for his league-leading 20th goal of the season.
The Pride power play went to work again, and tied the game at 2 at the 6:40 mark of the final period. Szwez found Brian Collins alone down low and Collins slid a shot past Broduer for his team-leading 15th goal of the season.
Pee Dee took its first lead of the night with another power play goal at 10:27. Tyler Kindle made a nice play to keep the puck in at the left point, and hit Jeff Szwez at the right point. Szwez blistered a slap shot past Brodeur for his 10th goal of the season, and his third point of the night.
The Pride took a two-goal lead with another power-play goal, this time on a two-man advantage. Szwez fed a perfect pass to Chad Spurr on the near post, and Spurr one-timed a shot past Brodeur for his sixth goal of the season.
With the four power-play goals in the game, Pee Dee is now 8-for-20 on the power play in the last four games.
