January 7, 2005 - ECHL (ECHL)
Bakersfield Condors News Release
Reading, Penn. - Dennis Shiryaev's goal in the final minute of regulation tied the game and the Bakersfield Condors eventually earned a 4-3 shootout victory over the Reading Royals in front of 5,189 fans at the Sovereign Center on Friday night.
Bakersfield took the early lead on their first shot of the game, just 2:27 in as Connor James cut out of the right wing corner and chipped a backhander past G Barry Brust. The rookie All-Star became the third Condor to hit double digits in goals on the season. Reading dominated the second half of the period, eventually amassing a 12-2 shot advantage but Condors G Randy Petruk held the lead through 20 minutes.
Reading came back and tied it up early in the middle frame. The two Royals All-Stars connected for the equalizer as Jeff Miles notched his 13th of the season from Ryan Kinasewich at 2:57. Near the midway point of the period the Condors trailed in shots 15-3, but eventually would gain the momentum. They fired 15 of the last 18 shots in the second and took an 18-17 shot lead to the dressing room tied 1-1 on the scoreboard.
The two teams exchanged early third period tallies to keep the game tied. But Miles' second of the game at 8:21 of the third regained the advantage for Reading. His wrist shot beat Petruk low to the stick side for his team-leading 14th of the season. But for the second time this season, Shiryaev scored in the final minute to tie the game. After a scoreless overtime session that saw Reading hit two posts, Vlad Serov and James scored in the shootout while Petruk stopped four of five to get the win.
The Condors continue their East Coast swing by traveling to Johnstown to play the Chiefs Saturday night at 4:05 p.m. Pacific Time. The Condors return home on Saturday, January 15th against Vegas once again for the final time they will be in town. That game is Nip & Puck Night, featuring a personal makeover giveaway, sponsored by Bright House Networks, The Big 96.5 and Shannti Medispa.
