Lynx earn shootout point against Gladiators
January 7, 2005 - ECHL (ECHL)
Augusta Lynx News Release
A back and forth contest between heated in-state rivals ended in favor of the Gwinnett Gladiators on Friday night by a 5-4 shootout count in front of 3,229 Augusta Lynx fans at the Augusta-Richmond County Civic Center.
First period action saw the Gladiators take a 2-0 lead before Augusta got on the board with a Jim Shepherd marker at 16:29 from John Cronin and Jamie Johnson to end the opening frame at 2-1.
The Lynx would tie the game with the lone goal of the second period when Eric Johansson scored a power play marker at 11:13 from Johnson and Louis Goulet to tie the game at 2-2 with eight seconds left in a five-on-three advantage, one of seven power plays on the night for the Lynx.
In the third period, Augusta grabbed the lead when Goulet scored at 2:51 from Ken Magowan and Rod Sarich to make it 3-2, but Gwinnett would respond with Rick Emmett's power play goal at 8:03 to tie the game again. With time winding down in the contest, Johansson's second goal of the night put them ahead 4-3, as he scored off a rebound from a Cronin shot at 18:23. Todd Bennett also picked up a helper on the goal for the Lynx. Finally, with time winding down and the Gladiators net empty, Brad Schell batted the puck in out of the air during a goalmouth scramble to tie the contest once more and send it to overtime.
With overtime providing no further scoring, it was on to the shootout for both teams. Gwinnett was the only team to mark in the extra session, beating Jason Saal twice while the Lynx were unable to beat Sean Fields after both goaltenders made 31 saves in regulation and the overtime.
Augusta and Gwinnett will battle for the third consecutive game tomorrow night at the Arena at Gwinnett Center with face off slated for 7:35 pm. Pre-game show will start one-half hour before puck drop on NEWSTALKSPORTS 1630, with the Lynx making their debut with B2Networks tomorrow night as well, with video broadcast of the game starting ten minutes prior to face off.
