Norfolk Admirals News Release

NORFOLK, VA - The Norfolk Admirals are proud to announce "A Night with Stanley" on Saturday, December 8. Admirals fans will have the opportunity to see Hockey's Holy Grail when the Admirals face off against the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins at Norfolk Scope Arena.

"We are thrilled to be able to bring the Stanley Cup to Hampton Roads," said Admirals Vice President and Assistant General Manager Mark Bernard. "This is a tremendous opportunity not only for hockey fans but for fans of all sports to see firsthand one of the most legendary trophies in sports history. This is an opportunity that does not come along often and we encourage all sports fans in the area to spend a night with Stanley on December 8."

"We are very thankful to the Hockey Hall of Fame for giving us this opportunity and to Ryan Belec of the Tampa Bay Lightning for assisting us in bringing this plan to fruition."

The Stanley Cup will be available for general viewing from 6:00 p.m. to the end of the game in Scope's Meeting Room 4. After the game, the Cup will be moved onto the ice where Admirals Season Ticket Holders will have the opportunity to take photos with the Cup on the ice. Season Ticket Holders must present their season tickets for that night in order to come onto the ice.

The Admirals are currently making arrangements for the Cup to travel to locations around the Hampton Roads area with more details to be announced soon.

The Stanley Cup is the oldest trophy in North American professional sports. It was originally donated in 1892 by Sir Frederick Arthur Stanley, Lord Stanley of Preston and son of the Earl of Derby. The Cup was to be presented to "the championship hockey club of the Dominion of Canada."

Since 1926, only National Hockey League teams have competed for the Stanley Cup. It is one of the hardest championship trophies to win, as it takes 16 playoff victories to claim the chalice. The Admirals' NHL parent club, the Tampa Bay Lightning, won the 2004 Stanley Cup. Norfolk Assistant Coach Darren Rumble was a member of that Lightning squad.

The Stanley Cup is the only trophy in professional sports where the name of every member of the winning team is inscribed. There have been numerous alterations to the Cup structure. Bands are often retired to make room for new champions. Retired bands, along with the original Stanley Cup bowl, are on display at the Hockey Hall of Fame in Toronto. The Stanley Cup is 35 ¼ inches tall and weighs 34 ½ pounds.

Each year upon presentation of the trophy to the championship team, a summer of celebration begins, as each of the organization's player and staff enjoy 24 hours with the Cup - a tradition which has no rival in any sport. In its many years of existence, the Stanley Cup has traveled around the world, including stays in Russia, Japan and Switzerland as well as atop mountain peaks through the Rockies and inside igloos inside Canada's newest territory, Nunavut.

Overshadowing all other championship trophies in sports, the legend and glory of the Stanley Cup continues to live in the dreams of hockey players and fans alike.

The Admirals return to Norfolk with three games next week. The week will kick off with a 7:15 matchup against the Philadelphia Phantoms on Wednesday night. Wednesday night is also USA Hockey Night and Baxter's College Night. Students with a valid, current college ID can receive $8 White Level Tickets and discounted food at Baxter's Sports Lounge for Wednesday night games throughout the season.
