
St. John's Maple Leafs Fight Cancer Weekend

The St. John's Maple Leafs announced today that the hockey club has once again teamed up with the Newfoundland and Labrador Chapter of the Canadian Cancer Society to introduce "Leafs Fight Cancer" weekend.
Funds raised through Hockey Fights Cancer help the Canadian Cancer Society fund the most promising research projects, provide information services and support programs in communities throughout the province and advocate for healthy public policies that prevent cancer and help those living with it. On the weekend of April 9th & 10th when the Maple Leafs host the Toronto Roadrunners the club will be involved with a variety of events to help raise funds and awareness in the fight against cancer.
Friday, April 9th - OZFM Music Night
· NHL Hall-of-Fame inductee and 4-time Stanley Cup Champion, Guy Lafleur, will be a part of an official puck drop launching the "Leafs Fight Cancer" weekend. Lafleur is a spokesman for Pfizer Canada promoting awareness across Canada regarding issues relating to men's health.
· Lafleur will also be available to sign autographs in Caps Pub during the first intermission.
· A silent auction will take place around the Mile One Stadium concourse featuring St. John's and Toronto Maple Leafs items and other sports memorabilia.
· OZ-FM personalities will assist the Canadian Cancer Society in giving away lapel pins at the door to the first 1,000 fans.
· OZ FM will host a 2nd period intermission "Battle of the Sexes" promotion.
Saturday, April 10th â The Telegram's Shirt Off Our Backs Promotion
· Guy Lafleur will be providing opening remarks at a Public Forum on Men's Health on Saturday morning, April 10 from 9:00-11:00am in Main Lecture Theatre in the Health Science Center. This forum is presented by Pfizer Canada.
· Presentation of Funds raised during the "Leafs Fight Cancer" Weekend.
· Silent Auction will take place around Mile One Stadium featuring St. John's and Toronto Maple Leaf items and other sports memorabilia.
· The St. John's Maple Leafs and The Telegram present their annual âShirts Off Our Back' promotion as Maple Leafs players give lucky fans their jerseys, right off their backs!
· The Telegram will also be hosting a Telly Toss during the 2nd intermission.
"Leafs Fight Cancer" is an initiative in conjunction with the NHL's "Hockey Fights Cancer" program which was launched in December 1998 in honor of hockey players and officials who have fought courageous battles against cancer. Since its inception more than $6 million has been raised to support cancer research and over $1 million of this has been donated to the Canadian Cancer Society.
