MANCHESTER, NH – The Manchester Monarchs, the AHL affiliate of the Los Angeles Kings, are proud to announce that defenseman Bryan Muir has been named the team's winner of the American Specialty/AHL Man of the Year award for his outstanding contributions to the Manchester community and charitable organizations during the 2003-04 season. Muir, 30, is the AHL's leading scorer among defensemen with 48 points (12-36=48) in 67 games. The 6-foot-4, 215-pound native of Winnipeg, Manitoba, also has one point (an assist) in two games with the Kings this season. Signed as a free agent by the Edmonton Oilers in 1996, Muir, a 2004 AHL All-star, has 20 points (5-15=20) and 167 penalty minutes in 181 career NHL regular season games with the Kings, the Colorado Avalanche, the Tampa Bay Lightning, the Chicago Blackhawks, the New Jersey Devils and the Oilers. Now in his eighth pro season, Muir was a member of the Avalanche club that won the 2001 Stanley Cup.

Muir and his wife have been charitably active for several years. During a recent interview about his day with the Stanley Cup, Muir described how he and his wife work with a cancer camp during the off-season, and how on his day with the Cup, he and his wife raised over $3,000 for the camp.

Cheryl Abbott, the Monarchs director of community relations, describes Muir as an exemplary role model for the community relations department.

"Whether it was at a school, a supermarket, a kids club party, a season ticket holder party, or a restaurant, Muir maintained a great attitude without complaints or reservations," said Abbott. "His ability to speak to children of all ages regarding goals for the Monarchs "Goals For Success" Program has been remarkable. He is able to convey the importance of setting short and long term goals in words that children understand."

In a recent taping for a D.A.R.E. Anti-Drug Program, Muir was able speak honestly about the dangers and temptations kids face nowadays, and what he faced growing up. He conveyed the importance of staying focused on your dreams.

Muir also took a proactive approach to raising maximum dollars for charity during the Monarchs annual "At Your Service" Dinner, which recently netted over $70,000 for area charities and the Monarchs Care Foundation.

In recognition of his efforts, Muir will be presented with an etched crystal trophy during an on-ice presentation prior to an upcoming home game.

Muir is now one of 28 finalists for the 2003-04 Yanick Dupre Memorial Award, honoring the overall American Specialty/AHL Man of the Year. The league award, named after the former Hershey Bears forward who died in 1997 following a 16-month battle with leukemia, will be presented during the Calder Cup 2004 Final.

The Monarchs (38-24-6-5, 87 points) will say thank you to their many fans when they host Fan Appreciation Night at the Verizon Wireless Arena on Friday, April 2. Only single seats remain for Friday's game against the Bridgeport Sound Tigers. For ticket information, visit the Monarchs on-line at www.monarchshockey.com.
