VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – The Norfolk Admirals are proud to announce that Shawn Thornton has been named the Admirals' winner of the American Specialty/AHL Man of the Year award for his outstanding contributions to the Hampton Roads community and charitable organizations during the 2003-04 season.

Currently in his third season with the Blue and Gold, Thornton has been recognized for his dedication to the enhancement of children's lives. Most notably, the Oshawa, Ontario, native volunteered to deliver toys collected from the Admirals' annual Toy Toss to Norfolk's Children's Hospital of the King's Daughters (CHKD) at Christmas, and continued to visit the hospital throughout the season. Thornton even made himself available to its young patients through phone calls when unable to appear in person.

In recognition of his efforts, Thornton will be presented with an etched crystal trophy during an on-ice presentation prior to an upcoming home game.

Thornton is now one of 28 finalists for the 2003-04 Yanick Dupre Memorial Award, honoring the overall American Specialty/AHL Man of the Year. The league award, named after the former Hershey Bears forward who died in 1997 following a 16-month battle with leukemia, will be presented during the Calder Cup 2004 Final.
