Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins News Release

WILKES-BARRE, Pa. - The Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins, American Hockey League affiliate of the Pittsburgh Penguins, are proud to announce that center Toby Petersen has been named the team's winner of the American Specialty/AHL Man of the Year award for his outstanding contributions to the community and charitable organizations in northeastern Pennsylvania during the 2003-04 season.

During his three seasons with the Penguins, Toby has been one of the team's most active contributors in the team's community relations program. Of his many charitable endeavors, Toby is most proud of his involvement in the fight against diabetes.

When Petersen was 5 years old, he diagnosed with juvenile diabetes, a disease that strikes children and makes them insulin dependent for life.

The past two years, Petersen has held a charity auction with all proceeds benefiting the fight against diabetes. This past February, his auction of unique or game-used Penguins memorabilia raised $3,209.18 with proceeds going to Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation International. Over the last two seasons, Petersen's auctions have raised nearly $8,000 for JDRF.

In recognition of his efforts, Petersen will be presented with an etched crystal trophy during an on-ice presentation prior to an upcoming home game.

In his fourth pro season, Petersen, 25, is ranked third on the Penguins in scoring with 39 points (14+25) in 57 games this season.

The 5'9", 197-pound native of Bloomington, Minnesota has appeared in 210 career games with Wilkes-Barre/Scranton, recording 172 points (71+101) and 48 penalty minutes. In 91 career games with Pittsburgh, Petersen has collected 26 points (10+16) and eight penalty minutes. He was drafted by Pittsburgh in the ninth round (244th overall) of the 1998 Entry Draft.

Petersen is now one of 28 finalists for the 2003-04 Yanick Dupre Memorial Award, honoring the overall American Specialty/AHL Man of the Year. The league award, named after the former Hershey Bears forward who died in 1997 following a 16-month battle with leukemia, will be presented during the Calder Cup 2004 Final.
