CLEVELAND — The Cleveland Barons can clinch their first-ever playoff berth on Wednesday night as they travel to Syracuse to battle the Crunch. The Barons Magic Number to clinch a playoff berth sits at 3 points. The Barons, who currently sit in third place of the North Division, can clinch a playoff spot if one of 5 scenarios were to occur:

If the Barons St. John's:

Defeats Syracuse Loses to Rochester

Defeats Syracuse AND Ties Rochester

Defeats Syracuse Loses to Rochester in overtime

Ties Syracuse Loses to Rochester in regulation

Loses to Syracuse in overtime Loses to Rochester in regulation

With one more victory or overtime game, the Barons will cement their first winning record in franchise history. Also, with their 28 point improvement over last season's 52 points, the Barons have the most-improved record in the AHL.

The AHL is unveiling a new playoff format this season. The top 5 teams in each division will earn a playoff berth. The fourth and fifth team in each division will play a three-game series to determine the opponent for the division's number one seed. Every series from there-after will be of the best-of-seven variety.
