Providence Bruins News Release

The Providence Bruins are proud to announce that left wing Mike Gellard has been named the team's winner of the American Specialty/AHL Man of the Year Award for his outstanding contributions to the Providence community and charitable organizations during the 2003-04 season.

Gellard, a 25-year-old native of Markham, Ontario, has made numerous appearances in schools, hospitals and after-school programs. He also helped organize a holiday party at Hasbro Children's Hospital, and has made regular appearances at the team's successful "Tip-A-Bruin" program.

Gellard, who missed what would have been his rookie season of 2001-02 due to a severe case of colitis, has also established a golf tournament in his hometown to raise funds and awareness for the Crohns and Colitis Foundation of Canada. Gellard organized the "Putt for the Gut" tournament during the summer of 2003, which involved over 100 participants, including NHL and AHL players. The tournament raised $10,000.

In recognition of his efforts, Gellard will be presented with an etched crystal trophy during an on-ice presentation prior to an upcoming home game.

Gellard will be on tonight's edition of "Providence Bruins Weekly Presented by National City Mortgage". The show airs on WSKO AM-790, The Score from 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.

Gellard is now one of 28 finalists for the 2003-04 Yanick Dupre Memorial Award, honoring the overall American Specialty/AHL Man of the Year. The league award, named after the former Hershey Bears forward who died in 1997 following a 16-month battle with leukemia, will be presented during the Calder Cup 2004 Finals.
