Springfield Falcons News Release

Springfield, MA - The Springfield Falcons are proud to announce that Jeremiah McCarthy has been named the Falcons' winner of the American Specialty/AHL Man of the Year award for his outstanding contributions to the Springfield community and charitable organizations during the 2003-04 season.

McCarthy, 28, has been involved with Falcons community efforts throughout the current season. McCarthy, along with teammate Trevor Gillies, participated in the Shriners Hospital Sled Hockey Program on a weekly basis at Amelia Park Rink in Westfield from mid-November to March. The Boston native assisted in drills and contributed both his hockey insight and sense of humor at practices with the young athletes. Sled Hockey offers the sport of hockey to people with lower extremity mobility limitations.

McCarthy has continuously volunteered for community appearances such as Holiday season hospital visits. The graduate of Harvard University has also been involved with fundraising events to benefit the Jennifer Ferraro Foundation including shooting pool with fans in February and visiting with fans at Friendly's Restaurant earlier this month. The Jennifer Ferraro Foundation assists patients with stomach and other cancers.

McCarthy, who has skated at both defense and forward for the Falcons this season, has registered 20 points on five goals and 15 assists in 72 games with the team this season.

In recognition of his efforts, McCarthy will be presented with an etched crystal trophy during an on-ice presentation prior to an upcoming home game.

McCarthy is now one of 28 finalists for the 2003-04 Yanick Dupre Memorial Award, honoring the overall American Specialty/AHL Man of the Year. The league award, named after the former Hershey Bears forward who died in 1997 following a 16-month battle with leukemia, will be presented during the Calder Cup 2004 Final.
