Bridgeport Islanders News Release
PHILADELPHIA, PA - The American Hockey League's Bridgeport Sound Tigers, top affiliate of the National Hockey League's New York Islanders, were shutout 2-0 by the Philadelphia Phantoms in the final game of six in a row on the road.
After posting a 9-5 advantage in a scoreless first period, the Sound Tigers were outshot 12-2 in the middle frame. Philadelphia also opened the scoring in the second period on a power-play goal by Kirk Furey off assists from Kirby Law and Ben Stafford at the 6:35 mark. In addition, the Sound Tigers went on a major power play late in the period, when Phantoms All-Star Kirby Law took a five-minute high-sticking penalty, but they could not take advantage.
Furey capped a strong effort and iced the win with his second goal of the game 8:48 into the third period off assists from Ian MacNeil and Boyd Kane.
The Sound Tigers did take a timeout and pull Goaltender Dieter Kochan in favor of an extra attacker with just under two minutes left to play, but they could not tie the score.
Furey was the first star of the game, Philadelphia Netminder Antero Niittymaki was the second with a 16-save shutout, and MacNeil was the third. Kochan made 20 saves in a losing effort. The Sound Tigers were 0 for 7 on the power play while the Phantoms were 1 for 5.
