Portland Pirates News Release

PORTLAND, ME – Long a fixture in schools throughout southern Maine, the Portland Pirates' "Goals For Success" program will make its debut in Downeast Maine next week. The Pirates will be visiting students in Washington County on Wednesday, January 28th on behalf of "Goals For Success," one of the educational programs, activities and collaborative efforts of the Portland Pirates' Foundation. "Goals For Success" is presented through the support of Partnership For A Tobacco-Free Maine, Bureau of Health, Maine Department of Human Services and the Healthy Maine Partnerships, St. Croix Valley Healthy Communities and Downeast Healthy Tomorrows in Washington County.

"'Goals For Success' has been one of our most successful community outreach programs during the last five years," said Brian Petrovek, Pirates' Managing Owner/CEO and President of the Pirates Foundation. "In that time, our players have spoken to thousands of students about how to be successful and achieve their goals, and we are fortunate that through the support of Healthy Maine Partnerships, we are now able to reach children beyond southern Maine."

The trip begins at 10:00 a.m. as the Pirates visit students from Machias area schools at the Reynolds Center at the University of Maine at Machias. Later, the Pirates will visit the Calais Middle School for a similar program at 12:45 p.m. The players will speak to the students about setting goals, the importance of balancing school work and extracurricular activities and living a healthy lifestyle by saying "no" to tobacco products, alcohol and other drugs. They will also speak to students about their own experiences growing up and how they have achieved some or many of their individual goals.

"We know kids in Washington County will benefit from the messages the Pirates effectively communicate through their Goals for Success program," said MaryBeth Welton, Program Manager of the Partnership For A Tobacco-Free Maine, a program of the Healthy Maine Partnerships. "Moreover, we know those messages will especially resonate with the kids when the messengers are professional hockey players."

Pepsi/Seltzer & Rydholm is a co-sponsor of Goals For Success. The Portland Pirates Foundation is the philanthropic arm of the Portland Pirates and a 501 (c) (3) Maine public charitable corporation.
