Bridgeport Islanders News Release
PROVIDENCE, RI - Jeremy Reich scored the game-winning goal and Scott Munroe made 41 saves to lead the Bridgeport Sound Tigers to a 3-1 win over the Providence Bruins Friday night at the Dunkin' Donuts Center. The Sound Tigers have now earned points in five straight games to improve their record to 17-13-1-2.
Zach Hamill put Providence on the board first, scoring his fourth goal of the season 7:04 into the game. With the Bruins on the power-play, Jeff LoVecchio carried the puck into the offensive zone and sent a pass into the slot. Trailing the play, Hamill charged in and one-timed a shot through Munroe's legs for the goal.
The teams exchanged scoring chances late in the first period. Jordan Knackstedt fired a shot off the cross-bar and, in the ensuing transition rush, Greg Mauldin was robbed on a scoring chance when Danny Sabourin made a pad save after Mauldin split the Bruins defense.
The Sound Tigers tied the game 1:07 into the second period when Tyler Haskins netted a shorthanded goal. As Bridgeport completed an impressive penalty kill, Mauldin sent Haskins on a rush up the ice. As he broke away from the Bruins defender, Haskins lifted a backhand shot into the top of the net for his third goal of the year.
Playing against his former team, Reich scored what turned out to be the game-winning goal 1:29 into the third period. With Bridgeport on the power-play, Reich carried the puck around the net and stuffed a wrap-around shot inside the post for his first goal as a Sound Tiger.
Providence outshot Bridgeport 42-34. Munroe made Reich's goal stand-up as his 41 saves equaled his second highest total of the season. It was the third time this season Munroe has made at least 40 saves in a game. Matt Martin added an empty-net goal with 14 seconds remaining to seal the victory for the Sound Tigers.
The Sound Tigers continue their road trip with a visit to Portland Saturday night at 7:00 pm. Bridgeport will be back on home ice Sunday afternoon when the Sound Tigers host the Springfield Falcons at 4:00 pm. The game will feature the annual Teddy Bear Toss. All fans are asked to bring a stuffed animal to the game to donate to local children's hospitals. For tickets, please call TicketMaster at 1-800-745-3000 or log on to www.soundtigers.com.
