Rats Fall 3-2 In Lowell

December 18, 2009 - American Hockey League (AHL)
Albany River Rats News Release

Lowell, MA-Alexander Vasyunov broke a third period tie with 8:17 left in regulation and the Lowell Devils held on for a 3-2 win over the Albany River Rats Friday night at Tsongas Arena.

River Rats defenseman Jamie McBain gave his club a 2-1 lead early in the second period on high shot from the blue line, but Devils leading scorer Ben Walter knotted the game later in the frame and Vasyunov converted on a 2-on-1 rush midway through the third to cease Albany's season-high winning streak after seven games.

Lowell rookie Nick Palmieri struck first from close-range at 4:42 of the first period. Zach Boychuk evened the score for Albany on a tremendous individual play at 16:10, stick-handling through a pair of converging defensemen and side-stepping a charging goalie to pot his eighth of the season.

Devils goalie Mike McKenna stopped 31-of-33 shots faced to earn the win as Lowell improved to 16-11-2-0 this season. River Rats netminder Justin Peters turned aside 24-of-27 shots and took the loss, as Albany dropped to 17-11-2-1 this year. The River Rats out-shot Lowell 33-27 in the game and went 0-for-2 on the power play; the Devils finished 0-0 on the man-advantage.

Albany will finish its weekend schedule on the road against the Syracuse Crunch on Saturday with a 7:30 p.m. face-off at the Onondaga County War Memorial. River Rats 2009-10 pro-rated season and flexible ticket packages are now on sale at the River Rats executive offices at the Times Union Center, by calling (518) 487-2244 or by logging onto www.albanyriverrats.com
