Binghamton Senators News Release
NORFOLK, V.A. - Before the drop of the puck, only one point separated these East Division foes in the standings. But it was the Admirals who sailed past the Senators and moved into third place in the East Division with a 3-1 win in the first of back-to-back games between the two teams at the Scope Arena.
The B-Sens, who came into the game averaging nearly 37 shots on goal per game, were only able to challenge Admirals' goaltender Dustin Tokarski with 26 shots, taking only 7 shots in both the first and second periods. The Admirals outshot the Senators 34-26, marking only the eleventh time Binghamton has been outshot this season.
The Admirals struck first midway through the first period on a goal from winger Juraj Simek. Veteran Mark Parrish brought the puck up the far boards and fired a shot from the left face-off circle, drawing two B-Sens defensemen towards him. The shot was turned aside by Binghamton's Andy Chiodo, but Parrish gathered his own rebound and slid a pass to an open Simek in the slot who blasted a shot over the shoulder of Chiodo.
Norfolk took a 2-0 lead at the 7:31 mark of the second period. Admirals forward Martins Karsums collected the puck deep in the Senators zone and threw it towards the net from the corner boards. Adam Hall was there to poke the puck past Chiodo for his fifth goal of the season.
Binghamton first got on the board with nearly five minutes remaining in the third period on the power play. Defenseman Tomas Kudelka picked up a loose puck in the neutral zone, brought it in along the side boards, turned and slid a pass to Drew Bannister at the point. Bannister teed up and fired through traffic, beating Tokarski to pull the B-Sens within one.
In a last attempt to force the game into overtime, Chiodo was pulled for an extra attacker, but Norfolk's Adam Hall intercepted a pass in the Admirals zone and buried the empty netter for his second goal of the game to seal the victory for Norfolk.
Binghamton looks to redeem themselves tomorrow night in the second game of the weekend double header with the Admirals at the Scope Arena. Drop of the puck is at 7:15 pm.
