Solar Bears Acquire McAvoy from Elmira

Orlando, FL - The Orlando Solar Bears, proud affiliate of the NHL's Toronto Maple Leafs and AHL's Toronto Marlies, announced today that they have acquired D Spencer McAvoy from the Elmira Jackals. The trade completes an outstanding future considerations agreement from early November when D Mike Bergin was traded to Elmira.

McAvoy (6-3, 200 lbs.) has played in 23 games for the Jackals this season, logging 26 PIM. The rookie blueliner skated the last five seasons (2009-14) for St. Francis University (CIS), where he tallied 72 points on 20 goals and 52 assists to go along with 92 PIM. McAvoy was named to the CIS First All-Star Team in 2010-11, finishing ninth among league defensemen with 22 points while leading all St. Xavier defensemen in goals (6) and assists (16). He also led all team defensemen in scoring in 2011-12, when he finished with 17 points (3 goals, 14 assists) in 27 games.

A native of Edmonton, AB, McAvoy played five seasons (2004-2009) in the WHL with the Swift Current Broncos and Medicine Hat Tigers, finishing with 18 goals, 59 assists, 77 points, and 207 PIM in 244 games. He had his best offensive season in 2008-09, finishing second among Swift Current defensemen in assists (39) and points (44).
