The Week That Was

---December 30th- RAPID CITY RUSH 5, TULSA OILERS 3 (RC-5 unanswered goals, R. Girard-19 SV in relief)

The Oilers came out to a roaring start in the opening 10 minutes, but the Rush started to chip away in the second. Daniel Barczuk scored twice in a Rush rally that ultimately saw them score five unanswered goals over the course of the last 40 minutes of play. Kyle Stroh broke the deadlock in the third period, en route to a 5-3 win to start the road trip.

---December 31st- ALLEN AMERICANS 5, RAPID CITY RUSH 3 (ALN-J. Combs-Hat Trick)

The Americans jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the first thanks to a Rylen Schwartz shorthanded goal and a Jack Combs strike, but Robin Soudek would snipe a power play goal to bring the Rush within striking distance after one. The Americans ended up advancing to a 4-1 lead, but the Rush crept right back in thanks to goals by Justin Faryna and Daniel Barczuk. With the Rush down 1, Jack Combs completed his hat trick and sealed a 5-3 win on New Year's Eve, just the second time in franchise history the Rush have fallen on December 31st.

---JANUARY 2nd-ALLEN AMERICANS 4, RAPID CITY RUSH 3 (ALN-I. Schultz-2 G, GWG on SHG in 2nd Period)

The Americans started the new year with a bang, jumping out to a 2-0 lead two games in a row, but Justin Faryna answered 28 seconds later to get the Rush on the board. J.P. Chabot closed out the first period with his seventh goal of the season, his sixth on the power play, to even the game at 2 heading into the middle frame. After Robin Soudek was taken out of the game due to a penalty, Landon Oslanski made the Americans pay for it with a power play goal, giving the Rush a 3-2 lead. After Jack Combs tied the game, Jonathan Narbonne was knocked out of the game on a hit by Garrett Clarke, and despite the Rush earning a five-minute major power play, it was the Americans' Ian Schultz that scored a shorthanded goal to ultimately give the home side a 4-3 win.

---JANUARY 3rd-TULSA OILERS 3, RAPID CITY RUSH 1 (TUL-3 Goals in 3rd, J. Jubenville-2 G)

Depleted by injuries sustained in the previous game, the Rush battled to an early 1-0 lead thanks to J.M. Rizk's third goal of the season (his 10th point in 12 games with the Rush). Rush rookie goaltender Raphael Girard played 53:06 of shutout hockey, but Jon Booras and Jeff Jubenville scored 2:24 apart to tie and later take the lead late in the game. Jubinville added an empty-netter to seal a 3-1 Oilers win, the first of five consecutive match-ups between both clubs.

---January 4th-RAPID CITY RUSH 6, TULSA OILERS 3 (RC-C. Ferriero-Hat Trick, first 3 career ECHL Goals; Rush-14 shots allowed)

Two nights in a row, the Rush started with a 1-0 lead on J.P.Chabot's tip of a rebound past Tulsa netminder Kevin Murdock. 54 seconds into the second, Jon Booras tied the game for the second consecutive night, but Cody Ferriero re-established the lead with his first strike 7 minutes later. Exactly 58 seconds later, Daniel Tetrault's fifth of the season from the blue line extended the Rush lead to 3-1. Dylan Clarke's strike four and a half minutes into the third gave the Rush a 4-1 lead, but Matt Larke and Jeff Jubinville struck 3:07 apart to come within striking distance to bring the score to 4-3. With less than five minutes to play, Ferriero added his second of the night on a rebound from an Andy Huff shot, and with 16 seconds left he completed his hat trick, capping off a four-point night with a 6-3 win.

Notes and Numbers

Sweet 16 - Rookie forward Cody Ferriero would have triggered a shower of hats if he was playing at home on Sunday afternoon. The first year pro out of Northeastern University netted his first 3 career ECHL goals in just his third game in the "Premier AA Hockey League", marking the first hat trick of his career. Add an assist to that, and Ferriero compiled a 4-point game when all was said and done against the Tulsa Oilers. His hat trick is also the 16th one in Rapid City Rush history.

Multiply by 2 - In addition to Cody Ferriero's big night, four other Rush players succeeded in recording 2 points in Sunday's 6-3 win against the Oilers. Riley Weselowski, Johan Ryd, and Andy Huff each recorded 2 assists, while Dylan Clarke, former All-CHL Rookie with the Oilers, netted a goal along with an assist.

60% Left - With the first two games complete, the Rush and Oilers now meet for three more match-ups in Rushmore Plaza Civic Center this week. The Oilers are 7 points ahead of the Rush for the final playoff spot in the Central Division heading into these last three games of this stretch, but the Rush hold two games in hand over their division rivals.

CRUNCHING NUMBERS - Last Week vs the Americans and Oiler s:

- 6 - the number of power play goals scored by J.P. Chabot this season. For Chabot, 75% of his goals have come off the man-advantage, and his 6 on the power play make up around 20% of the Rush's power play goal total

- 1 - the number of hat tricks scored and allowed by the Rush this season. It took them 31 games this season to allow one player to score three times against them, but 48 hours later saw their rookie accomplish the same feat.

- 14 - the number of shots the Rush allowed against the Oilers on Sunday afternoon. The 14 shots marks a franchise record for fewest shots allowed against the Rush, breaking the previous record of 18 set all the way back in the Rush's inaugural 2008-09 CHL season against the Corpus Christi Ice Rays on October 24th, 2008.
