Seesaw Battle Goes to Kalamazoo

Wheeling Nailers News Release

WHEELING, WV- For the second straight season, the Wheeling Nailers and Kalamazoo Wings are divisional rivals, and on Friday night, fans at WesBanco Arena were treated to the first of what should be eight nailbiting affairs between the contest. Both teams accumulated two leads, and in the end, it was Kalamazoo who came away with the 4-3 win, as Ludwig Blomstrand snapped a 3-3 deadlock with 8:30 remaining in the third period.

The Nailers needed only 93 seconds to find their way onto the scoreboard. Paul Cianfrini banked a pass up the left wing wall to Shane Bakker, who was entering the offensive zone. Bakker ended up leading an odd-man rush, which resulted in his centering pass to Adam Krause in the slot. Krause slammed a one-timer through a sliding Joel Martin, giving Wheeling its quickest goal in 2015-16. Kalamazoo answered later in the stanza, doing so on the power play. Evan McEneny set up Ludwig Blomstrand for a one-timer from the top of the right circle, which was padded away by Franky Palazzese. Dane Fox pounced on the rebound, depositing it back into the net for the equalizer.

Early in the second period, the Wings took their first lead of the evening. Colin Murray chopped a loose puck off of the left side of the offensive zone, before finding Adam Phillips, who buried a shot from the middle of the slot. The Nailers tied the tilt midway through the frame, utilizing a beautiful redirect on the power play. Anton Zlobin wristed a dipping pass from the top of the left circle, which was knocked into the cage by Ty Loney for his third goal in as many ECHL games.

Wheeling regained its advantage at the 3:18 mark of the third. Franky Palazzese kicked away a Kalamazoo shot, which led to a 2-on-1 break in the opposite direction. Sahir Gill kept the puck to himself, ripping a wrist shot past Martin's glove hand. Unfortunately, that lead didn't last, as the visitors rallied. At 7:06, Phillips drilled home his second of the game with a powerful one-timer from the top of the left circle, which was teed up by Steve McCarthy's pass. Then, with 8:30 left in regulation, Ludwig Blomstrand roofed a shot from the right circle, giving the Wings a 4-3 lead, which turned out to be the final, despite a last second attempt by the Nailers, who came inches away from forcing overtime.

Reigning ECHL Goaltender of the Week Joel Martin got the win for Kalamazoo, stopping 34 of the 37 shots he faced. Franky Palazzese took the loss for Wheeling, making 23 saves on 27 shots.

The Nailers will visit the Norfolk Admirals on Saturday at 7:15, before returning home for four games next week, starting with the Education Day Field Trip Game on Tuesday at 10:35 a.m. against the Cincinnati Cyclones. Other events next week include Flat Screen Friday, presented by the Highlands and Bordas & Bordas, WVU College Night with Pat White and Steve Slaton on Saturday, and McDonald's $5 Kids Tickets and a post game skate with the team on Sunday.

Individual tickets, season tickets, mini plans, and group tickets are on sale now, with prices starting as low as $10 per seat. For tickets and more information, call the Nailers at (304) 234-GOAL or online at wheelingnailers.com.
