Admirals Sail Past Swamp Rabbits, 4-2
November 6, 2015 - ECHL (ECHL)
Greenville Swamp Rabbits News Release
Norfolk, VA - The Greenville Swamp Rabbits (3-5-0), proud ECHL affiliate of the New York Rangers and the AHL's Hartford Wolf Pack, bounced back from an early two-goal deficit on Friday, but suffered a 4-2 loss to the Norfolk Admirals (3-4-0) at the Norfolk Scope.
Rob Kwiet and Domenic Alberga each scored their first goals of the season, but the Swamp Rabbits allowed a pair of third-period tallies and dropped their fourth consecutive contest. Between the pipes, Swamp Rabbits' goaltender Mackenzie Skapski (0-1-0) made 29 saves in the setback.
In the inaugural meeting between the two clubs, Norfolk opened the scoring just 2:38 into the first period when Admirals' captain Jordan Hill netted his first goal of the season. Josh Currie entered the zone on the right side and cut hard towards the crease to take a backhand shot. Skapski denied the first attempt along with a second chance from Tommy Mele, but Hill jammed home a third effort to make it 1-0.
Greg Chase extended the Admirals' lead just 1:02 later when he buried his team-leading fourth goal of the season. Deep in the right corner, Marco Roy corralled the puck and guided a pass to the right circle where Chase unloaded on a one-timer that filtered through Skapski's five-hole and in.
Greenville cut its deficit in half at 8:12 of the middle frame courtesy of Kwiet. Jack Combs and Sean Escobedo created the attack in the Norfolk zone, playing catch on the left wing, before Combs forced a pass to Kwiet at the top of the right circle. Kwiet settled the puck and fired a blast over the glove of Admirals' netminder Ty Rimmer for his first tally of the season.
Alberga evened the game at 16:50 of the second period when he gained the blue line on the left side and wristed an uncontested shot over Rimmer's blocker. Alberga's drive funneled its way inside the left post for his first goal of the season from Emerson Clark and Bretton Cameron.
Norfolk's Alexandre Ranger broke the deadlock and netted the game-winner at 5:53 of the third period with his first professional goal. At even strength, Michael Pelech centered the puck from the right circle to create a scramble in the crease. As Skapski dove to cover it up, the puck slid loose to Ranger below the hash marks, where he pounded home a one-timer to make it 3-2.
Rookie Connor Rankin capped the scoring at 12:22 of the third period with a power-play goal for the 4-2 final. With Kwiet in the box for hooking, Currie skated through the left circle and took a low shot towards the far post that Skapski denied. He could not cover the rebound, however, and Rankin netted a third chance from the blue paint for his first pro goal.
The contest included one tilt when Justin DaSilva dropped the gloves for the first time in his pro career with Mele at 18:55 of the second period.
Greenville finished the game 0-for-5 on the power play and 3-for-4 on the penalty kill. Rimmer (3-4-0) halted 23 shots in the win.
The Admirals outshot the Swamp Rabbits 33-25.
