November 6, 2015 - ECHL (ECHL)
Wheeling Nailers News Release
Duck Hunting was a Success
The Wheeling Nailers picked up their fourth win of the season on Saturday night, when they defeated the Quad City Mallards, 2-1 at WesBanco Arena. Sahir Gill opened the scoring with Wheeling's sixth power play goal in the last five games, when he potted the rebound of Clark Seymour's shot from the blueline. Then, with just 6.5 seconds remaining in the first period, Riley Brace netted his first goal of the season, giving the Nailers what turned out to be a big 2-0 lead. Quad City cut its deficit in half with a power play marker during the second period, but was unable to find the back of the net on 23 other shots, as Brian Foster earned his first home win with Wheeling.
It Slipped Out of Their Wings
The Kalamazoo Wings held the unbeaten Adirondack Thunder off of the scoreboard for the first 58:56 of Wednesday morning's contest, building a 2-0 lead on goals by Colin Murray and Dane Fox. However, the final 1:04 of regulation and the first 2:12 of overtime created a chapter that the Wings would like to put behind themselves rather quickly. Ryan Constant scored at 18:57 of the third period, and David Shields tallied with 15 seconds left for the Thunder, evening the score and forcing an extra session. At the 2:12 mark of overtime, Rob Bordson lit the lamp for the seventh time this season, lifting Adirondack to the win. Ken Appleby made 25 saves to defeat Joel Martin, who was successful in turning away 29 of 32 shots for Kalamazoo.
Now the Schedule Heats Up
For the first three weeks of the season, the Nailers have gotten into a regular rhythm with their schedule, playing two games, then having nearly an entire week off to prepare for the next two. While this weekend also features a Friday-Saturday set, Wheeling will have significantly less time to wait for its next stretch, as five games in six days find their way onto next week's docket. That makes for an overall total of seven games in ten days, with five of those tilts taking place at WesBanco Arena. The opponents are Kalamazoo, Norfolk, Cincinnati, Reading, and Evansville, before the Nailers depart for Florida the following week. This will be one of two 7-in-10 stretches for Wheeling in 2015-16, who will also face four scenarios with six games in nine days.
Martin is Their Man
In the 42 years in which hockey has existed in Kalamazoo, there are likely few better known and well-liked goaltenders than Joel Martin, who is currently playing in his seventh season as a member of the Wings. Martin's first two years as a K-Wing came during the team's UHL days, and one other season was in the IHL, while the last four (counting 2015-16) have taken place in the ECHL. Over that time, Joel has skated into the Kalamazoo crease on 275 occasions, earning wins in 154 of those appearances. Earlier this week, the 33-year old was recognized as the CCM ECHL Goaltender of the Week, after making 80 saves on 84 shots in two wins over Indy and Cincinnati. Martin is expected to make his seventh straight start on Friday.
More Chances to See Them
Friday night marks the first of eight head-to-head meetings between the Nailers and Wings this season, as well as the first of five battles between the two clubs at WesBanco Arena. Since Kalamazoo joined the ECHL in 2009, the two sides have clashed 32 times, with 16 contests taking place in each building. Both clubs have earned eight victories on home ice, giving the all-time series an even tally of 16 victories a piece. Last year, four of the five games occurred at Wings Stadium, where both squads went 2-2-0. The only game that took place at WesBanco Arena was Clark Donatelli's record-setting 125th win - a 4-1 decision in favor of the Nailers on March 13th. The first five games of 2015-16 will all be played in Wheeling, before the season series shifts to Wings Event Center for three tilts in March.
