Elmira Jackals News Release
NORTH CHARLESTON, SC - C.J. Motte was sensational tonight making 32 saves as the Elmira Jackals silenced the South Carolina Stingrays in their own building with a 2-0 victory. Tyler Currier and Mike Seidel scored for Elmira in the win.
The Jackals jumped ahead quickly with an opening stinger just 5:50 into the game. Tyler Currier started a four-on-two rush up ice and ripped a whistling wrist shot past Vitek Vanecek from just above the tops of the circles. Currier's unassisted tally was his third goal in as many games with the Jackals since being acquired from the Orlando Solar Bears on October 24th. C.J. Motte turned aside all 11 shots faced in the first 20 minutes of action and led the Jackals into the first intermission with a 1-0 lead.
Just 15 seconds into the second period Spiro Goulakos laid a heavy hit on Max Sauve just inside the Jackals blueline as the offsides whistle sounded, which started a gathering around the Elmira defenseman. Goulakos was handed a five minute match penalty for an illegal check to the head and was escorted off the ice. Not only did the Jackals face a five minute penalty kill in the face, but they were also cut down to five defenseman for nearly two full periods. The pesky Jackals showed their resiliency and killed off the full five minute penalty courtesy of a tireless effort from the penalty kill units and stonewall goaltending from Motte. Later in the period, Josh Chapman dropped the gloves with Bobby Shea and landed some heavy rights in his first professional tilt. As the second frame was winding down the Jackals earned a power-play opportunity and capitalized. Justin Bernhardt found Zach Tolkinen straight-away at the point for a blast that was redirected by Mike Seidel and past Vanecek to put the Jackals ahead 2-0 at 18:23 of the period.
The Jackals continued to play stifling defense and locked down their blueline, forcing South Carolina into countless turnovers throughout the third period. The Stingrays pulled their goalie with just under two minutes remaining in a last-ditch effort for a comeback, but their late push was turned away by Motte, who stole the show in the Stingrays' barn.
C.J. Motte stopped all 32 shots faced to earn his first professional shutout and his first win with the Jackals. Vitek Vanecek allowed two goals on 24 shots faced and was handed the loss.
