Norfolk Admirals News Release

NORFOLK, Va. - Connor Rankin and Alexandre Ranger each scored their first professional goal in the third period to lift the Norfolk Admirals to a 4-2 win over the Greenville Swamp Rabbits Friday night at Scope Arena.

Defensemen Jordan Hill gave the Admirals an early 1-0 lead just 2:38 into the first period. After two saved shots on goal, Hill backhanded his first marker of year into the net off a rebound opportunity. Forward Tommy Mele and right wing Josh Currie were credited for the assists.

Forward Greg Chase entered tonight's game riding a five-game point streak. Almost a minute after Hill's goal, Chase was able to push his streak to six games when he gave the Admirals a 2-0 lead 3:40 into the first. Chase's fourth goal of the season came on an assist by center Marco Roy.

It wasn't until the second period when the Swamp Rabbits lit the lamp. Greenville defensemen Rob Kwiet buried a slap shot from the right point, flying past Norfolk netminder Ty Rimmer's left shoulder into the top right corner of the net. Combs and Escobedo helped on Kweit's goal. Greenville trailed the Admirals 2-1, 8:12 into the second period.

With 3:10 left in the middle frame, a Greenville counter-attack left Rimmer frozen as forwards Clark and Cameron dished the puck to Escobedo, who broke along the left side and hammered one past Rimmer. Both Greenville players tallied their first goal of the season tonight, and left the game notched at 2-2 at the end of two.

The final period is where the Admirals took the lead and never looked back. Just 5:53 into the third, the Admirals moved ahead when Ranger was left wide open in front of net to knock home an easy rebound opportunity. The rebound came from shots by Pelech and Lessard, as they both earned an assist.

The Admirals took a commanding 4-2 lead 12:22 into the third when a rebound from Josh Currie and Gabriel Verpaelst went wide, and Rankin appeared to clean up the scraps along the left side of goal. Rankin scored his first career professional goal while Currie notched his seventh assist of the season, giving him a per-game average of one assist through the first seven games and the Admirals a 4-2 win.

Rimmer denied 23 of 25 Greenville attempts on net while Skapski allowed four goals on 33 shots. Norfolk held the Swamp Rabbits scoreless on the power play, but managed to convert on one of its four man advantages.

Norfolk seeks to even-up their (3-4-0-0) record as they defend home ice tomorrow night for a 7:15 p.m. match-up against the Wheeling Nailers. The Admirals then hit the road to South Carolina on Sunday for a 3:05 p.m. meeting against the Stingrays.
