Norfolk Admirals News Release
NORFOLK, Va. - The Norfolk Admirals of the ECHL sign goaltender Nic Riopel to a standard players contract today.
Riopel, 26, returns to North American professional hockey after playing the last three seasons in Europe. He helped the Rouen Dragons to the 2015 French Cup Championship, finishing the year with a 19-7 record and 2.51 goals-against average (GAA). The 6-foot, 190-pound netminder grew up in St. Pie, Quebec, and made stops in the United Kingdom's Elite Ice Hockey League in 2012-13 as well as Denmark's top league in 2013-14, the AL-Bank Ligaen.
The Philadelphia Flyers drafted Riopel in the fifth round of the 2009 NHL Entry Draft before he made his professional debut with Adirondack in the American Hockey League the following season. Riopel participated in 21 career AHL contests and 65 ECHL games so far. He has a 2.93 career GAA and a 38-23-4 overall record in the ECHL. Riopel also made two appearances with Rapid City earlier this season in his return to the ECHL.
The Admirals also announce today that defenseman Alex Lepkowski has been released. Lepkowski never played a game in an Admirals uniform.
Norfolk defends home ice tonight at 7:30 p.m. and Saturday at 7:15 p.m. against the Greenville Swamp Rabbits and Wheeling Nailers, respectively. Tickets are available for purchase at the Scope Box Office, online at ticketmaster.com, and charge-by-phone at 1-800-745-3000. Sunday, the Admirals hit the road for a matchup against the South Carolina Stingrays at 3:05 p.m.
