Alaska Aces News Release
PHOENIX - Chanse Fitzpatrick forced overtime late in the third period and then sealed only the second Phoenix win in 11 games against Alaska by scoring in the shootout as the RoadRunners prevailed 2-1 in extra time in front of 5,567 Friday at the US Airways Center in downtown Phoenix.
After a scoreless first period featuring just 12 shots on goal combined between the two teams, the second period saw the action open up somewhat. However, the game remained locked in a 0-0 tie until a late second period rush, in which Kimbi Daniels banked a wrist shot off the right skate of Joe Talbot at 17:42, giving Alaska a 1-0 edge entering the final 20 minutes.
Rookie goaltender Isaac Reichmuth seemed determined to protect that one-goal lead, bidding for his first shutout since his sophomore year at the University of Minnesota-Duluth. But with 4:09 left in regulation, a slap shot by Fitzpatrick whistled just inside the left goal post for the equalizer, forcing overtime. Each team had a power play in OT, but the game was not decided until Justin Aikins and Fitzpatrick scored against Reichmuth (31 saves) in the shootout, while Mike Morrison stopped all four Alaska attempts after making 41 saves in 65 minutes. The Aces out-shot the RoadRunners 42-32, but are now winless in their last three games away from home.
Alaska (35-13-3) and Phoenix, who ended a six-game winless skid to climb back over the .500 mark at 23-22-4, face one another again tomorrow night at 5:11 p.m. AST, with live coverage beginning at 4:50 p.m. on the flagship home of Alaska Aces hockey, KFQD 750 AM. While the 'Runners must play again on Sunday, against the Long Beach Ice Dogs, the Aces take two days off before meeting Phoenix for the final time in the regular season, Tuesday at 5:11 p.m. AST.
