March 16, 2004 - ECHL (ECHL)
Peoria Rivermen News Release
Reading, Pa. (March 16, 2004) â The Peoria Rivermen let two third-period leads slip away and fell to the Reading Royals 4-3 in a shootout on Tuesday night before a crowd of 4,112 at the Sovereign Center.
The Royals tied the game 2-2 at 6:16 of the third. Reagan Rome took a pass in the high slot from Davyduke and rifled his fourth goal of the season just under the crossbar.
Peoria took its second lead of the game less than a minute later with a power play tally, making it 3-2. Colin Hemingway, just off the right goal post, took a Marty Johnston pass from the high slot and chipped it in behind Reading goaltender Cody Rudkowsky. It was Hemingway's second of the night and 14th in a Rivermen uniform.
The Royals evened the game again with their second power play goal at 10:10 of the third. David Masse launched his 11th of the season just under crossbar from the right face-off circle on a pass from Lars Pettersen.
Reading finished 2-for-6 with the man advantage, while Peoria was 1-for-2.
In the shootout, Reading's Graig Mischler registered the shootout-winning tally in the second round, while Kent Davyduke added the insurance in the third round. Rudkowsky turned away all four Peoria chances from Johnston, Adam Edinger, Hemingway and Scott Crawford.
Peoria (39-17-9, 87 points) earned a point for the shootout loss, falling to 6-5 in shootouts on the season. The Rivermen fell to 20-6-6 on the road and finished the season series with the Royals at 3-1-2. Reading (32-22-9, 73 points) snapped a four-game losing streak and a season-worst, eight-game winless streak (0-7-1) with the shootout win â its fifth of the season (5-6). The Royals, who improved to 5-6 in shootouts, completed a seven-game home stand with just one victory (1-5-1), while their record at the Sovereign Center is 22-6-4.
Peoria goaltender Mike Valley turned away 30 of 33 chances in regulation and overtime. In the shootout, he stopped one of three chances, falling to 20-8-7 on the season. Rudkowsky improved to 19-16-3 on the year, stopping 37 of 40 in regulation and overtime.
A scoreless first period was highlighted by a brawl between Peoria's Dave Kaczowka and Reading's Dave Stewart. Both started the fight exchanging left hands, before Kaczowka switched to his right and connected a few uppercuts and right crosses.
The Royals broke the scoreless tie on the power play at 4:07 of the second. Judd Medak jumped in behind the Rivermen defense to the top of the goal crease, taking a pass out of the right wing corner from Davyduke and chopping home his 20th tally of the season.
Just 1:37 later with Reading on another power play, Peoria tied the game 1-1 with its 10th shorthanded goal of the season. After a turnover at center ice, Joe Vandermeer found Hemingway at the top of the left face-off circle in the Royals zone. Hemingway settled the puck and fired a shot inside the right goal post that cleanly beat the former Rivermen Rudkowsky. It was his 13th goal in a Rivermen uniform.
The last time the Rivermen scored shorthanded was on December 21 in Reading in a 2-1 shootout win.
At 7:26 of the second period, Rivermen Captain Trevor Baker was hauled down in the Reading slot by Mischler and was rewarded with a penalty shot. As he broke in straightaway, Baker let a snap shot go that Rudkowsky turned away with his blocker. It was the first penalty shot for or against the Rivermen this season and the 24th in the ECHL.
The Rivermen grabbed their first lead of the night on Kaczowka's second goal in a uniform. Edinger fed Kaczowka as he was charging down the Reading slot with a defenseman draped all over him. Kaczowka was able to sidestep Rudkowsky off the right goal post and slip the puck in behind him. It was Kaczowka's fourth marker of the season.
Tomorrow night â Wednesday, March 17 â the Rivermen battle the Trenton Titans in the fifth game of seven in a row on the road. Game time is 6:00 p.m. CT.
