South Carolina Stingrays News Release
NORTH CHARLESTON, SC South Carolina Stingrays Head Coach Jason Fitzsimmons announced today the signing of former Stingrays Marc Genest and Kevin Knopp. Both players were signed this morning out of retirement and will be on the ice tonight for the Stingrays, when the team hosts the Alaska Aces.
Genest has not played for the Stingrays since being traded to the Raleigh Ice Caps for Brad Dexter in 1997. Knopp last played for the Stingrays in 1998, when he was part of a multi player deal that landed him in Richmond. Knopp was a member of the 1997 Kelly Cup Championship team.
"Our injury situation leaves us with no other choice than to bring in these two players" said Fitzsimmons. "Hopefully they can give us some quality minutes to give some of the other guys a rest."
Both players played last season, but have been retired locally this year.
Genest had his best season on 1998-99 with the Idaho Steelheads when he scored 26 goals and added 48 assists for 74 points in 65 games. Last season, he played for the Cape Fear Fire Antz of the ACHL and had 38 points.
Knopp helped the Stingray to the ECHL title in 1997 after scoring 51 points on ten goals and 41 assists during the regular season. A year ago he played with Lexington of the ECHL.
The Stingrays host the Alaska Aces tonight at 7:05.
